       Zusammenfassung

      Am 29. Dezember 2018 ist der Initiator und langjährige „Macher“ der Initiative Baum des Jahres Dr. SILVIUS WODARZ im Alter von 87 Jahren verstorben. Die Bäume des Jahres werden seit 1989 ausgerufen und regelmäßig in Augsburg auf den Deutschen Baumpflegetagen und im Jahrbuch der Baumpflege vorgestellt. Aus diesem Anlass werden die Aktivitäten und das Lebenswerk von WODARZ hier gewürdigt und wichtige Hintergründe zum Baum des Jahres und zu den Zielen der Ausrufung dargelegt.

       Summary

      On December 29th 2018, Dr SILVIUS WODARZ passed away at the age of 87 years. He was the founder and the most active person of the initiative Tree of the Year for decades. The trees of the year are presented annually on the German Tree Care Conference in Augsburg and in the Yearbook of Arboriculture. For this reason the activities and life work of Wodarz are acknowledged here, and some background information on the Tree of the Year and the objective of the proclamation is explained.

       1 Entstehung und Ziele der Initiative Baum des Jahres, Wahlvorgang

      Seit 1989, also seit 30 Jahren, wird jährlich eine Baumart als Baum des Jahres benannt und ausgerufen, begründet durch Dr. SILVIUS WODARZ und den von ihm gegründeten Umweltschutzverein Wahlstedt e.V., später vom Verein Baum des Jahres und seit 2008 von der Baum des Jahres-Dr. Silvius Wodarz-Stiftung mit zugehörigem Förderverein und Kuratorium als Beirat getragen. Alle drei Förderinitiativen hat WODARZ viele Jahre selbst geleitet: das Kuratorium bis 2009, den Verein bis 2010 und die Stiftung bis 2018. Das Kuratorium Baum des Jahres (KBJ) bestimmt immer auf seiner Jahresversammlung im Oktober in Berlin drei Baumkandidaten für das übernächste Jahr. Davon wird anschließend im Jahr vor der Ausrufung in schriftlicher Abstimmung aller Kuratoriumsmitglieder eine Baumart ausgewählt, die das KBJ dann der Stiftung vorschlägt und die von dieser zur Ausrufung im Herbst des Vorjahres (Abbildung 1) übernommen wird.

      Mitglieder im KBJ sind 35 Verbände, Vereine, Stiftungen, Einrichtungen, Institutionen und Einzelpersonen, die sich besonders intensiv mit Bäumen beschäftigen, auch aus der
