Hans Baars

This book is intended for everyone in an organization who wishes to have a basic understanding of information security. Knowledge about information security is important to all employees. It makes no difference if you work in a profit- or non-profit organization because the risks that organizations face are similar for all organizations. It clearly explains the approaches that most organizations can consider and implement which helps turn Information Security management into an approachable, effective and well-understood tool. It covers: The quality requirements an organization may have for information; The risks associated with these quality requirements; The countermeasures that are necessary to mitigate these risks; Ensuring business continuity in the event of a disaster; When and whether to report incidents outside the organization. The information security concepts in this revised edition are based on the ISO/IEC27001:2013 and ISO/IEC27002:2013 standards. But the text also refers to the other relevant international standards for information security. The text is structured as follows: Fundamental Principles of Security and Information security and Risk management. Architecture, processes and information, needed for basic understanding of what information security is about. Business Assets are discussed. Measures that can be taken to protect information assets. (Physical measures, technical measures and finally the organizational measures.)The primary objective of this book is to achieve awareness by students who want to apply for a basic information security examination. It is a source of information for the lecturer who wants to question information security students about their knowledge. Each chapter ends with a case study. In order to help with the understanding and coherence of each subject, these case studies include questions relating to the areas covered in the relevant chapters. Examples of recent events that illustrate the vulnerability of information are also included. This book is primarily developed as a study book for anyone who wants to pass the ISFS (Information Security Foundation) exam of EXIN. In an appendix an ISFS model exam is given, with feedback to all multiple choice options, so that it can be used as a training for the real ISFS exam.

A Global Security System

Kent Shifferd

Resting on a convincing body of evidence that violence is not a necessary component of conflict among states and between states and non-state actors, World BEYOND War asserts that war itself can be ended. We humans have lived without war for most of our existence and most people live without war most of the time. Warfare arose about 10,000 years ago (only 5% of our existence as Homo Sapiens) and spawned a vicious cycle as peoples, fearing attack by militarized states, found it necessary to imitate them; and so began the cycle of violence that has culminated in the last 100 years in a condition of permawar. War now threatens to destroy civilization as weapons have become ever more destructive. However, in the last 150 years, revolutionary new knowledge and methods of nonviolent conflict management have been developing that lead us to assert that it is time to end warfare and that we can do so by mobilizing millions around a global effort.

Here you will find the pillars of war which must be taken down so that the whole edifice of the War System can collapse, and here are the foundations of peace, already being laid, on which we will build a world where everyone will be safe.

This book presents a comprehensive blueprint for peace rooted in three broad strategies for humanity to end war: 1) demilitarizing security, 2) managing conflicts without violence, and 3) creating a culture of peace. These are the interrelated components of our system: the frameworks, processes, tools and institutions necessary for dismantling the war machine and replacing it with a peace system that will provide a more assured common security.
Finding Soldiers of Peace

Gary Uzonyi

The United Nations, which lacks its own peacekeeping force, faces three dilemmas when organizing a peacekeeping mission: convincing member states to contribute troops, persuading states to deploy troops quickly, and securing a troop commitment long enough to achieve success. The key to overcoming these challenges, Gary Uzonyi argues, is emphasizing the connection between peacekeeping and slowing the flow of refugees across borders. Finding Soldiers of Peace makes the case for this approach, which balances states’ self-interests with the United Nations’ goal of civilian protection. Through an analysis of post–Cold War UN peacekeeping missions, particularly interventions in Mali and Sudan, Uzonyi shows how member states often tie civilian protection rhetoric to efforts to keep conflict-driven refugees from crossing into their territory. Conventional wisdom holds that member states primarily engage in peacekeeping for payment or humanitarian reasons. Uzonyi proves otherwise, helping scholars and practitioners more accurately predict which member states are most likely to send support, where states may send assistance, when they might become involved, the size of their contribution, and their timetable for leaving. His research promotes practical strategies for the organization and execution of future missions that ensure member states stay invested in the outcome. A data-rich exploration of the UN response to humanitarian crises, Finding Soldiers of Peace shows how policymakers and practitioners can better strategize the execution of UN peacekeeping missions among diverse, and even contentious, stakeholders.

Africa and the Backlash Against International Courts

Peter Brett

At the start of the twenty-first century the story of Africa’s engagement with international law was one of marked commitment and meaningful contributions. Africa pioneered new areas of law and legal remedies, such as international criminal law and universal jurisdiction, and gave human rights jurisdiction to a number of new international courts. However, in recent years, African states have mobilised politically and collectively against the regional courts and the International Criminal Court, contesting these institutions’ authority and legitimacy at national, regional and international levels. Africa and the Backlash Against International Courts provides the first comprehensive account of this important phenomenon, bringing together original fieldwork, empirical analysis and a critical overview of the diverse scholarship on both international and African regional courts. Moving beyond conventional explanations, Brett and Gissel use this remarkable research to show how the actions of African states should instead be seen as part of a growing desire for a more equal global order; a trend that not only has huge implications for Africa’s international relations, but that could potentially change the entire practice of international law.

Peace In the Hood

Aquil Basheer

When we think of gangs, we are likely overcome with images of fear and violence. But there is another side, that of the interventionists devoted to making peace in gang territories. Written by Aquil Basheer, a pioneer of the interventionist movement, Peace In the Hood takes us inside this dual world of violence and intervention, evoking the reality of gangland warfare while acknowledging the possibility of peace. Basheer has witnessed firsthand the brutality of gang violence. After founding the Professional Community Intervention Training Institute, Peace In the Hood marks Basheer’s next step in spreading his message of nonviolence. Designed to teach anyone how to become an interventionist, the book offers clear guidelines on the work. Each chapter deals with a key aspect of peacemaking and comes with anecdotes from Basheer’s own life. However, Peace In the Hood is not just a guide for burgeoning interventionists; it provides useful insights for everyone living in an area affected by gangs. Its descriptions make it the perfect tool for students and teachers of social justice, and its mix of narrative and advice creates an accessible text—a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of gangs and the efforts to make peace among them.

Bridging the Theory-Practice Divide in International Relations

Группа авторов

There is a widening divide between the data, tools, and knowledge that international relations scholars produce and what policy practitioners find relevant for their work. In this first-of-its kind conversation, leading academics and veteran practitioners reflect on the nature and size of the theory-practice divide. They find that the gap varies by issue area and over time. The essays in this volume use systematic data gathered by the Teaching, Research, and International Policy (TRIP) Project over a fifteen-year period. As a whole, the volume analyzes the structural factors that affect the academy’s ability to influence policy across issue areas and the professional incentives that affect scholars’ willingness to attempt to do so. Individual chapters explore these questions in the issue areas of trade, finance, human rights, development, environment, nuclear weapons and strategy, interstate war, and intrastate conflict. Each substantive chapter is followed by a response from a policy practitioner, providing their perspective on the gap and the possibility for academic work to have an impact. Bridging the Theory-Practice Divide in International Relations provides concrete answers and guidance about how and when scholarship can be policy relevant.
