      About the Author

Steve Ashton began walking and climbing in Britain in his early teens. By the age of 17 he had made the first ascent of a grade VI rock climb in the Italian Dolomites. He moved from his native Lancashire to North Wales in the 1970s, initially to work as a climbing instructor but then as a freelance writer and photographer. He has since written ten books on hill walking and mountaineering, including the now classic Scrambles in Snowdonia (Cicerone Press). For several years he was the equipment editor then humour columnist for High Mountain Sports magazine, and a regular contributor of adventure travel features to Country Living. He has won several awards for his writing, including the Outdoor Writers’ Guild Award for Excellence in 1992, 1994 and 1998.

He currently teaches playwriting at the Arden School of Theatre in Manchester and is an actor with Cat’s Eye Theatre Company.
