The rapid development in various fields of Digital Audio Effects, or DAFX, has led to new algorithms and this second edition of the popular book, DAFX: Digital Audio Effects has been updated throughout to reflect progress in the field. It maintains a unique approach to DAFX with a lecture-style introduction into the basics of effect processing. Each effect description begins with the presentation of the physical and acoustical phenomena, an explanation of the signal processing techniques to achieve the effect, followed by a discussion of musical applications and the control of effect parameters. Topics covered include: filters and delays, modulators and demodulators, nonlinear processing, spatial effects, time-segment processing, time-frequency processing, source-filter processing, spectral processing, time and frequency warping musical signals. Updates to the second edition include: Three completely new chapters devoted to the major research areas of: Virtual Analog Effects, Automatic Mixing and Sound Source Separation, authored by leading researchers in the field . Improved presentation of the basic concepts and explanation of the related technology. Extended coverage of the MATLABTM scripts which demonstrate the implementation of the basic concepts into software programs. Companion website (www.dafx.de) which serves as the download source for MATLABTM scripts, will be updated to reflect the new material in the book. Discussing DAFX from both an introductory and advanced level, the book systematically introduces the reader to digital signal processing concepts, how they can be applied to sound and their use in musical effects. This makes the book suitable for a range of professionals including those working in audio engineering, as well as researchers and engineers involved in the area of digital signal processing along with students on multimedia related courses.
You can reduce the risk of your patients suffering an osteoporosis-related fracture. Osteoporosis is a highly prevalent, treatable disease, but it is currently incurable. Successful early diagnosis can lead to effective treatment strategies that reduce the risk of a patient’s life being compromised by serious fracture injury. In Osteoporosis, Dr Dale Stovall has assembled world-leading experts who guide you through modern best-practice approaches to: • Diagnosis of osteoporosis • Risk assessment for fractures • Use of calcium and vitamin D • Medical therapy and follow up • Future approaches to treatment Osteoporosis empowers you to identify and treat your patients with osteoporosis and low bone mass, preventing subsequent fractures and improving their quality of life.
An electric drive that is designed or adapted to a specific application must take into account all the elements of the chain of constituent elements in its use and deployment. In addition to the motor, the transmission, power electronics, control, sensors, and electrical protection systems must be taken into account. The motor and the transmission can be optimized and designed to obtain the best energy efficiency assessment, in particular for dynamic nodes. An inventory and a characterization of these various components is proposed as part of this book’s examination and explanation of the different technology elements, as well as a dynamic model of the system, with the whole system constituting a methodology for integrated electric drive design.
Thermoelectrics: Design and Materials HoSung Lee, Western Michigan University, USA A comprehensive guide to the basic principles of thermoelectrics Thermoelectrics plays an important role in energy conversion and electronic temperature control. The book comprehensively covers the basic physical principles of thermoelectrics as well as recent developments and design strategies of materials and devices. The book is divided into two sections: the first section is concerned with design and begins with an introduction to the fast developing and multidisciplinary field of thermoelectrics. This section also covers thermoelectric generators and coolers (refrigerators) before examining optimal design with dimensional analysis. A number of applications are considered, including solar thermoelectric generators, thermoelectric air conditioners and refrigerators, thermoelectric coolers for electronic devices, thermoelectric compact heat exchangers, and biomedical thermoelectric energy harvesting systems. The second section focuses on materials, and covers the physics of electrons and phonons, theoretical modeling of thermoelectric transport properties, thermoelectric materials, and nanostructures. Key features: Provides an introduction to a fast developing and interdisciplinary field. Includes detailed, fundamental theories. Offers a platform for advanced study. Thermoelectrics: Design and Materials is a comprehensive reference ideal for engineering students, as well as researchers and practitioners working in thermodynamics. Cover designed by Yujin Lee
Environmental awareness in Germany is closely linked to washing powder. The mountains of foam in many rivers during the hot summer of 1958 showed how Western lifestyles were incompatible with the environment: the surfactants in washing powder were biologically upgradeable or, at best, hardly degradable. This played a large role in creating environmental consciousness and in strengthening research into washing powders. Here the author disseminates the chemical, biological and physical knowledge behind modern washing processes to all interested parties; schools, students, and lab workers; to all who need, use and – above all – pass on this knowledge: teachers, trainers, lecturers, consultants, professional associations, consumer agencies, societies, government agencies and other private or state-run institutions will appreciate this detailed, yet readily comprehensible source.
Fire protection in construction requires a high degree of expert knowledge about the current state of all relevant codes and products. The 2011 Building Physiscs Yearbook offers a reliable aid in planning for new and existing structures according to Eurocodes.
Fungi: Biology and Applications, Second Edition provides a comprehensive treatment of fungi, covering biochemistry, genetics and the medical and economic significance of these organisms at introductory level.
