Un instrumento de persuasión que utilizó la retórica de las imágenes de los santos de los primeros tiempos como un modelo a seguir para alcanzar la salvación, principalmente dirigido a las gentes iletradas de los nuevos territorios. En ese contexto, se destacó la leyenda de santa Bárbara como una de las más importantes en la consolidación del cristianismo. No obstante, la imagen con sus atributos tradicionales de la torre, el cáliz y la espada, de común figuración en la Europa Medieval, sufrió una transformación sustancial en algunos templos de la actual región cundiboyacense donde fue representada tanto en la pintura como en la escultura, en el momento del suplicio de cortar sus senos. Un hecho no registrado en la hagiografía primitiva de la defensora del trueno y patrona de la buena muerte.
Mediante un análisis cronológico e iconográfico de 220 imágenes de santa Bárbara realizadas entre los siglos XV y XVIII, se buscó, en primer lugar, establecer la representación convencional y sus variaciones, además de su distribución en Europa y en América. Después, se procedió a la formulación de hipótesis acerca de los condicionamientos que acompañaron al artista neogranadino Gaspar de Figueroa, a sus descendientes, y casi un siglo después, al escultor Pedro Laboria en la ejecución de la imagen de la denominada santa Bárbara barroca."
