In the last few years, impressive research has been done on disorders of sex development (DSD), largely expanding the physiopathology with relevant effects on practice. Thus, management of individuals with DSD requires updated scientific knowledge, integrating basic and clinical information. In addition, doctors involved in the care of individuals with DSD need to develop specific personal skills in communication, ethics, legal issues and the ability to work together in dedicated multidisciplinary teams. National or even international networks are also mandatory to create stringent structures for correctly addressing the care of individuals with DSD and to offer them a better long-term outcome. This special issue of Sexual Development covers several of these hot topics and highlights some aspects of research and management. A special paper from a patient support group has been enclosed to present the opinion of affected people. All the authors have been selected regarding their expertise and documented competencies.
GenEthics and Religion
Human gene and cell technology is a diverse and rapidly evolving field of research. As genes represent the 'blueprint' of an organism, their analysis and manipulation is a challenge to our understanding of human nature. Stem cell research, genetic testing, gene therapy, therapeutic and reproductive cloning – all these fields of application have been raising fundamental ethical and religious-theological questions: When does human life begin? Should human beings be allowed to interfere with natural procreation or to manipulate the genome of their own species? Is genetic engineering tantamount to 'playing God'? Based on the symposium 'GenEthics and Religion' held in Basel, Switzerland in May 2008, this volume examines the role religion can play in establishing ethical guidelines to protect human life in the face of rapid advances in biology and especially gene technology. It does so in a multidisciplinary way with contributions by philosophers, theologians, human geneticists, and several bioethicists representing the Christian, Jewish, Islamic and Buddhist perspectives. The essays illustrating a diversity of views and expressing the problems and self-critical reflectiveness of religious ethicists have been brought up to date and discuss the importance of religious ethics in society’s discourse on gene technology.
Gas Biology Research in Clinical Practice
The substantial biological importance of gaseous mediators in various physiological-pathological conditions has been realized only recently, but to date, the detailed mechanisms involved remain elusive. The publication at hand contains 16 overviews written by a panel of experts who summarize the current knowledge and provide fundamental insights into the roles of gaseous molecules in signal transduction in biological systems. The first part provides a comprehensive overview on gaseous mediators in health and disease. In the second part, the medical application of various molecules such as nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen, acetone and phytoncide are discussed. Furthermore, articles on skin gas biology and Carbon-13 (13C), especially clinical applications of 13C-labeled substrate are included. This book provides valuable information not only for basic researchers in physiology and biochemistry, but also for gastroenterologists and clinicians who wish to learn more about the role of gaseous mediators.

Knowing One's Medical Fate in Advance

Mithradates VI af Pontos
Mithradates VI af Pontos (132-63 f.Kr.) var Roms sidste alvorlige udfordring i kampen om kontrollen over Lilleasien og det ostlige Middelhavsomrade. I tre krige, de sakaldte Mithradatiske Krige fra 89 til 63 f.Kr., paforte Mithradates romerne betydelige tab, og i 89 lykkedes det ham endda at erobre den romerske provins Asia. Til sidst blev han dog besejret af Pompejus den Store i 66 f.Kr. og blev fordrevet til den afsidesliggende by Pantikapaion. Efterhanden gjorde flere byer og til sidst ogsa hans egen son Farnakes opror mod kongen, og i 63 f.Kr. blev den aldrende Mithradates tvunget til at tage sit eget liv. Historien skrives som bekendt af sejrherrerne, og kilderne tegner derfor generelt et billede af Mithradates som en uligevAegtig, despotisk tyran. Fire antikforskere ser her med nye ojne pa overleveringen om en af antikkens store personligheder.
