The Sacred Foodways of Film

Antonio D. Sison

The Sacred Foodways of Film explores the ways by which the portrayal of food in film offers creative spaces for theological insight. From the Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg produced title The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014) to the Oscar Best Foreign Language Film winner from Japan Departures (2008), eleven diverse films invite us to taste and see the mutually enriching blend of food and faith depicted onscreen. Smithsonian magazine describes the last two decades as «The Era of Crazed Oral Gratification.» The explosion of interest in food culture, what is touted as the «foodie revolution,» is evident across media platforms in the United States as well as in many other parts of the world. Curiously, there has not been a book specifically dedicated to the confluence of theology/religion and food films. The Sacred Foodways of Film is a timely contribution to this fascinating area of interest that has long been simmering on the stovetop of scholarship.

Be a Blessing

Elizabeth Ellen Ostring

Utilizing the techniques of narratology and literary analysis, this study examines the foundational biblical text of Genesis to develop the theology of ordinary human work that emerges from it. The study offers a history of Christian theologies of human work as well as a unique approach to both the topic of work and the literary structure of Genesis. The emerging concept of blessing rather than achievement provides a refreshing and yet practical approach to human work. This is a valuable complement to the current interest in this topic, and one that, although challenging some current concepts, is encouraging.

Jesus, Clear and Simple

James G. Friesen

What is Christian about counseling? That far-reaching question is exactly what prompted Dr. Friesen to deepen his study of The Sermon on the Mount. «Is what I do consistent with what Jesus said? This must direct my counseling or it does not qualify as 'Christian.'» He has been seriously engaged in the study of Psychology and Theology since 1974, beginning as a student at the Fuller Theological Seminary Graduate School of Psychology. Having specialized in the teachings of Jesus since 1981, the present book presents a fitting summary of Dr. Friesen's work, bringing all of Jesus' teachings together with what he has learned as a Christian Psychologist. Jesus' teachings are all about him being with us in times of struggle. This book captures that truth in each chapter.
Coming from more than twenty years in Bible study groups, Jesus, Clear and Simple: In Times of Struggle includes Life Group discussion guides for each chapter. That is where Jesus' teachings come to life–when two or three or more are gathered together to learn from the Master.

Gods That Fail, Revised Edition

Vinoth Ramachandra

The globalizing world of late modernity is heavily awash with pseudo-gods. Gods That Fail provocatively deploys the theological concept of idolatry to explore the ways in which these gods blind their devotees and wreak suffering and dehumanization. Many of these pseudo-gods have infiltrated the life of the Church and compromised its witness. Combining lively social critique with fresh expositions of familiar biblical stories, this book engages with a variety of secular discourses as well as the sub-Christian practices that accompany and undermine Christian involvement in the public square.

Three Skeptics and the Bible

Jeffrey L. Morrow

Biblical scholars by and large remain unaware of the history of their own discipline. This present volume seeks to remedy that situation by exploring the early history of modern biblical criticism in the seventeenth century prior to the time of the Enlightenment when the birth of modern biblical criticism is usually dated. After surveying the earlier medieval origins of modern biblical criticism, the essays in this book focus on the more skeptical works of Isaac La Peyrere, Thomas Hobbes, and Baruch Spinoza, whose biblical interpretation laid the foundation for what would emerge in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as modern biblical criticism.
