Yaszek and Sharp's critical annotation and author biographies link women's work in the early science fiction community to larger patterns of feminine literary and cultural production in turn-of-the-twentieth-century America. In a concluding essay, the award-winning author Kathleen Ann Goonan considers such work in relation to the history of women in science and engineering and to the contemporary science fiction community itself.</P>

<P>Hartford Seen is the first modern-day art photography book focused exclusively on Connecticut's capital city. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Pablo Delano relocated from Manhattan to Hartford in 1996 to teach photography at Trinity College. On his daily drive to work, he was struck continually by the city's visual beauty and complexity. He left the car and began to explore, using his camera as a means of gaining a deeper understanding of what he found.</P><P>In this personal meditation on Harford's built environment, Delano implements a methodical but intuitive approach, scrutinizing the layers of history embedded in the city's fabric. He documents commercial establishments, industrial sites, places of worship, and homes with a painter's eye to color and composition. His vision tends to eschew the city's better-known landmarks in favor of vernacular structures that reflect the tastes and needs of the city's diverse population at the dawn of the 21st Century.</P><P>Over the last 100 years Hartford may have transformed from one of America's wealthiest cities to one of its poorest, but as suggested by Hartford Seen, today it nevertheless enjoys extraordinary cultural offerings, small entrepreneurship, and a vibrant spiritual life. With most of his novels having appeared in English, this book opens a new window on his oeuvre. A moving poetic essay that bears witness to the forgotten history of the French penal colony in French Guiana, French Guiana—Memory Traces of the Penal Colony (Guyane—Traces-Mémoires du bagne) is accompanied by more than sixty evocative color photographs by Rodolphe Hammadi and translated, here for the first time, deftly by Matt Reeck.</P><P>In the tradition of his late Martinique compatriot Édouard Glissant, Chamoiseau theorizes a means for recovering indigenous history against Western, colonial overwriting through history with a capital «h.» His prose poetry combines fragments of history with his diarylike notes of a visit to the penal colony's ruins. He uses the phrase «traces-mémoires» (memory traces) to conceptualize how land, ruins, and discarded bits of history return to the surface of time and attention. In doing so, with his prose framed by the eloquent layer of Hammadi's images, he not only suggests rich ways of conceptualizing Caribbean memory but also provides tools applicable to other contexts where aesthetic and ethical approaches to oppressive colonial pasts arise. </P><P>A must for readers of the author's novels in translation, French Guiana—Memory Traces of the Penal Colony will also interest scholars and students of Caribbean studies, postcolonial studies, memory and trauma studies, and world literature.</P>
