What is Artificial Intelligence?

Suman Gupta

This book engages with the title question: what is artificial intelligence (AI)? Instead of reiterating received definitions or surveying the field from a disciplinary perspective, the question is engaged here by putting two standpoints into conversation. The standpoints are different in their disciplinary groundings — i.e. technology and the humanities — and also in their approaches — i.e. applied and conceptual. Peter is an AI engineer: his approach is in terms of how to make AI work. Suman is a humanities researcher: his approach is in terms of what people and academics mean when they say 'AI'.A coherent argument, if not a consensus, develops by putting the two standpoints into conversation. The conversation is presented in 32 short chapters, in turn by Suman and Peter. There are two parts: Part 1, Questioning AI, and Part 2, AI and Government Policy. The first part covers issues such as the meaning of intelligence, automation, evolution, artificial and language. It outlines some of the processes through which these concepts may be technologically grounded as AI. The second part addresses policy considerations that underpin the development of AI and responds to the consequences. Themes taken up here include: rights and responsibilities; data usage and state-level strategies in the USA, UK and China; unemployment and policy futures.Contents:

Part 1: Questioning AI:

Setting Terms

More Terms

Questioning Terms, and a Provisional Concept of Intelligence

Elaborating Terms

Methods and Approaches

Methods and Field

Discerning the Intelligent Agent

Realising the Intelligent Agent

Recognising the Intelligent Agent

The Intelligent Agent in the Prospect

Devolving Evolution

Evolution as a Creativity Engine

Evolution and Articles of Faith

On Evolution: Ungrounded Hardwired Knowledge Short Circuits Intelligence

On Evolution: Intelligence Short Circuits Ungrounded Hardwired Knowledge

Reflections on the Artificial in AI

Parameters of the Artificial in AI

Limits of the Artificial in AI

Restrictions on AI Research

Expectations of AI Research

Part 2: AI and Government Policy:

Policy and Legal Autonomy

Autonomy and Grounding Responsibility

Legal Autonomy: Rights and Responsibilities

Autonomy: Limiting and Conferring Rights

Note on Rights and Data Matters

Note on Qualia and Using Data

Doubting Qualia and Social Data

Data Users and Data Doubters

Data Distinctions and Data Nations

Data Doubters and Data Owners

Populism, Jobs and Policy Futures

Jobs, Futures and AI Engineers

Readership: General informed readers. Future Texts

Группа авторов

Future Texts: Subversive Performance and Feminist Bodies sketches several possibilities for future texts, those that imagine new pathways through the forms used to express contemporary questions of race, gender, and identity. Future Texts: Subversive Performance and Feminist Bodies’ area of investigation is situated within popular culture, not as a place of critique or celebration, but rather as a contested site that crosses an array of media forms, from music video, to games, to global journalism. While there is an established tradition in feminist writing founded on experimental expression that disrupts patriarchal culture, it has too often failed to consider issues of race and class. This is evident in the dilemma faced by black feminists who, alienated from dominant feminism’s failure to consider their experience, have been forced to choose whether they were black or women first. To push back against such identity splintering, Future Texts: Subversive Performance and Feminist Bodies begins with the politics and aesthetics of Afrofuturism, which sets the stage for the dialogue around contemporary feminism that runs through the collection. With a paradigm of remix as linguistic play and reconfiguration, the chapters confront the question of narrative codes and conventions. These new formats are crucial to rewriting the relationship between hegemonic and resistant texts.

Florida

Группа авторов

This collection proposes Florida as a nexus of various contested moments, ideas, concepts, and relations. In the age of networks, it is not enough to only think of computerized, economic, or labor-intensive systems as networks. Florida is both a site of exploration—what does Florida mean – and a model for spatial work in general—how do we trace out the networked connections of a given space? Florida taps into an existing conversation regarding space, and it contributes a new approach by offering up the state as a network of both objective and personal meanings.

New Media/New Methods

Группа авторов

The essays in New Media/New Methods: The Academic Turn from Literacy to Electracy pose an invention-based approach to new media studies. They represent a specific school of theory that has emerged from the work of graduates of the University of Florida. Working from the concept of electracy, as opposed to literacy, contributors pose various heuristics for new media rhetoric and theory.
