Gessner hatte ein junger Goldschmiedemeister ab 1706 als gewählter Münzmeister die Bühne für die Münz- und Medaillenherstellung in Zürich betreten. In talentierter, technisch geschickter und feiner Kunstfertigkeit veränderte er das Münz- und Medaillenbild, er erweiterte dessen ikonographischen Kanon und inszenierte unter dem Einfluss des in Zürich sich ausbreitenden Gedankengutes der Aufklärung im Auftrag der Stadt Zürich deren Selbstwahrnehmung im Münz- und Medaillenbild. Nach seinem Ableben 1737 überstrahlte sein Vermächtnis bis zum Ende des alten Stadtstaates 1798 die Münzprägung von Zürich, die Medaillenprägung nahm nach ihm ein abruptes Ende. Der vorliegende Band 18/2 beinhaltet den Oeuvrekatalog und der gleichzeitig erscheinende Band 18/1 enthält den Textteil.
