Who Telleth a Tale of Unspeaking Death?

    Группа авторов

Death is silent; all the ‘tales’ we hear about it – be they of a religious, philosophical, scientific or artistic nature – are told by other humans. but specific deaths are often utilised to reconfirm or challenge existing societal structures, values and belief systems. the eight ‘tales’ collated here – based on the work of the Research Strand Death, Burial and the Afterlife at University College Dublin’s College of arts and humanities – present numerous interdisciplinary examples of how this process works. The topics of the essays include the ideological orientations of Irish political funerals; the death rites of Cameroonian immigrants at home and in dublin; the Baroque artist Pietro da Cortona’s success in turning a Roman church into his own funeral monument; the role that Alexis de Tocqueville’s death played in his emergence as an iconic political theorist; the philosopher Josef Pieper’s attempt to approach the mystery of death through idealist thinking, the changing human attitudes towards the death of animals; the use of war maps as marketing devices during the Second World War; and the critique of political and societal structures embedded in Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s Berliner Requiem. This thought-provoking volume of essays, wide-ranging in scope and interdisciplinary in its approach, engages with questions surrounding the many meanings ascribed to death and the memorialisation of the dead. In its eight essays, it traverses whole thought-continents: from those who muse that ‘death has happened since the beginning of time; it is not to upset youtoday’ to the stark presentation of a reality which erodes the human face and thus a person's individuality. What clearly emerges are the many respects in which death itself has been and, indeed, remains, contested ground (both literally and metaphorically). This collection is an important contribution to the ever-expanding field of studies on Death and Dying.

Out of History is the first book to appear on the work of award-winning Irish author Sebastian Barry. Barry is recognized as one of Ireland's greatest living writers and his works now appear regularly on syllabuses in U.S.colleges, in Irish Studies and in Drama departments. This book, edited by Christina Hunt Mahony, presents twelve essays that trace the development of the writer's career and the individual achievement of his works, concentrating largely, but not exclusively, on the plays. The essays address Barry's engagement with the contemporary cultural debate in Ireland and also with issues that inform postcolonlal critical theory. The essays in this volume include contributions from the most prominent of Irish Studies critics from Ireland, Britain, and the United States. Among the contributors are two prize-winning novelists, a historian and recent biographer of the poet W.B. Yeats, a former editor ofPoetry Ireland, and several theatre historians and critics. The range and selection of contributors to this volume has ensured a high level of critical expression and an insightful assessment of Barry and his works.

    Irish Literature

    Группа авторов

International in scope and based on primary research, this book gathers twelve new essays by critics including both well-established and newer voices. It aims to stimulate further enquiry, research and critical reflection, in sceptical, analytic or celebratory modes, on the riches of Irish literary texts and traditions. The collection discusses texts from the early 18th century to the present. It also addresses those meta-narratives by which we understand and mediate these riches for contemporary and future use. The cumulative effect is to call into question, often in new contexts, master narratives of Irish studies. Some essays focus on the aesthetic – a vital category of discussion about a national literature – and its interweaving with ideological purposes. Others concentrate on different phases of the retrieval of women's texts previously occluded by gender bias in canon formation. A central theme is the need to renegotiate the relations of feminism with nationalism and to transact the potential contest of these two important narratives, each possessing powerful emancipatory force. Irish Literature: Feminist Perspectives contributes incisively to contemporary debates about Irish culture, gender and ideology.

The editors and chapter authors are seasoned parents, advocates, doctors, dentists, psychologists, behavior analysts, nurses, educators, and financial planners. They share their experiences and expertise on the following topics: – Diagnosis – Emotional Adjustment & Support – Genetics – Medical Concerns (health problems common in Down syndrome and ASD, conditions that can be missed when ASD is not recognized–reflux, pneumonia, hypothyroidism) – When Autism is Suspected for Teens and Adults with DS (often misdiagnosed as mental health problems) – Making the Most of Doctor Visits (coordinated, team approach to care) – What Autism Looks Like in a Child with Down Syndrome (comparing behavior of kids with DS- only to that of kids with DS-ASD at different ages using case studies) – Oral Health (tips & strategies to ensure cooperation during dental visits) – Behavioral Treatments for Sleep Problems – Care Coordination (the management of a child's needs across the entire care continuum) – Addressing Problem Behaviors – Designing Educational Programs – Multicultural Challenges (best practices to serve the needs of minority populations) – Life Planning (legal, financial, and quality-of-life issues)

    Living While Feminist

    Группа авторов

‘The power of structural violence is that it tries to silence us. The power of feminism is that it gives us a voice.’ So much of our life experience is filtered through our bodies – norms, myths, and cultural standards continue to shape the way that we and the world feel about our bodies and how we see ourselves. Feminism says these rules are bullshit. Our bodies can be tools for conformity or resistance. Feminism helps us learn and unlearn things about ourselves and the world we live in. Feminism is for all of us, for every single body. This collection takes us from an examination of skin and hair, to an exploration of pleasure, sex, and safety. It considers the way our bodies change, our health, and how we become who we are. It questions the way that institutions can trap us, how we can trap ourselves, and the importance of our hearts in all of this. Bold and honest, these writings ask questions more than they try to force answers. This book reminds us that feminism is dynamic, open, and ever relevant.
