Understanding Crime Prevention

International Education and Cultural-Linguistic Experiences of International Students in Australia
The internationalisation of higher education in the 20th century, built on an unprecedented expansion of transport and communication networks and the scope of international scholarly activities, triggered a massive flow of people across countries and continents. Geographically remote countries, such as Australia, became more attractive and accessible to migrants from Europe. Today, international education in Australia is under enormous pressure to reinvent itself. This book offers a collection of chapters that cover various dimensions of international education in Australia. The issues covered span from political and student identity concerns to the pedagogical and curriculum dimensions of international education and to the areas of language acquisition and language assessment. Forced migration is a global issue.
About 34 million of the world’s inhabitants were identified in 2010 by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees as either refugees, internally displaced persons, asylum seekers or stateless people. Systematic inquiries are urgently needed to understand and improve the circumstances in which these people live, and to guide national and international policies and programs
However, there are many ethical complications in conducting research with uprooted people, who have often been exposed to persecution and marginalisation in conflict situations, refugee camps, immigration detention settings, and following resettlement. This book brings together for the first time key scholars across a range of disciplines including anthropology, bioethics, public health, criminology, psychology, socio-linguistics, philosophy, psychiatry, social policy and social work to discuss the ethical dimensions, challenges and tensions of such research.
It encompasses the theoretical, conceptual, practical, and applied aspects of research ethics, while integrating different disciplinary perspectives. It is intended as a resource not only for researchers, students and practitioners but also for those conducting cross-cultural research more broadly. Integrative Assessment in Clinical Psychology
This book demonstrates an integrated model of clinical psychology practice where disorders are understood as the outcome of multiple interacting factors across different levels of analysis: biological, psychological and psycho-social. Using real-life case studies with expert analysis and interpretation by leading clinical psychologists and educators, the chapters presented in this book show how the planning of intervention needs to be informed by the available evidence. This integrated model allows interventions to be individually tailored rather than offered as a ‘one size fits all’ approach, placing greater emphasis on rigorous assessment as one of the core clinical skills and distinguishing features of a clinical psychologist. The integrated approach to clinical assessment is a prerequisite to an integrated approach to psychological therapy. Increasingly clinical psychologists are able to employ integrated forms of psychological therapy as the field comes to accept both the strengths and limitations of cognitive, behavioural, humanistic, psychodynamic and systemic approaches. Integration in contemporary approaches such as Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) or Schema Focused Therapy (SFT) are good examples of the blending and integration characteristic of contemporary practice. The case studies in this book cover a range of disorders, including substance abuse, depression, childhood depression, eating disorders, borderline personality disorder, obsessive behaviours, attachment disorder, sexual offending, dementia, learning difficulties and schizophrenia. Music Autoethnographies
Autoethnography is an autobiographical genre that connects the personal to the cultural, social, and political. Usually written in the first-person voice, autoethnographic work appears in a variety of creative formats; for example, short stories, music compositions, poetry, photographic essays, and reflective journals.  Music Autoethnographies explores an intersection of autoethnographic approaches with studies of music. Written through the eyes, ears, emotions, experiences and stories of music and autoethnography practitioners, this edited collection showcases how autoethnography can expand musicians' awareness of their practices, and how musicians can expand the creative and artistic possibilities of autoethnography. The Fitzgerald Legacy
Twenty years ago, the Commission of Inquiry into Possible Illegal Activities and Associated Police Misconduct, commonly referred to as the Fitzgerald Inquiry after its chair Mr G.E. (Tony) Fitzgerald, QC, tabled its findings in the Queensland Parliament after an exhaustive and sensational two years of public investigation. It was the fifth inquiry into police related matters in Queensland in 25 years, and originally expected by the government of the day to last about six weeks.
