Prantsuse ajakirjanik ja kirjanik Maurice Leblanc on eelkõige tuntud just tänu Arsène Lupini tegelaskuju loomisele. Leblanc sündis 1864. aastal Normandia ajaloolises pealinnas Rouenis Itaaliast pärit perekonnas. Varajases nooruses, pärast õpinguid mitmes riigis, siirdus ta Pariisi, kus tegutses ajakirjanikuna ja avaldas ka mõne ilukirjandusliku teose, kuid ilma erilise eduta. 20. sajandi alguses, kui Prantsusmaad tabas Sherlock Holmesi vaimustus, palus ajakirjanik Pierre Lafitte oma sõbral Maurice Leblancil kirjutada lühikese kriminaaljutustuse uuele ajakirjale Je Sais Tout. Ilma ühegi ideeta ja kurjategijatest midagi teadmata võttis Leblanc sule ja nii sündiski tema kangelane härrasvaras Arsène Lupin. Esimene lugu – „Arsène Lupini arreteerimine“ – ilmus 15. juulil 1905. Aastatel 1905 kuni 1941 kirjutas Leblanc kaheksa romaani ja kolmkümmend üheksa lühijuttu ning viis näidendit, mille peategelane oli Arsène Lupin.

The first short story of this collection was published in July 1905 in the newspaper Je sais tout. It was the first short story featuring Arsène Lupine. This one having success, Maurice Leblanc is encouraged to write the continuation, in several short stories. What will be done until 1907.
