Corn Dogs zählen seit Kurzem zu den absoluten Rennern in Sachen Streetfood. Wie einfach diese moderne Variante von teigummantelten Würstchen selbst hergestellt werden kann, erläutert dieses Buch. Ein Würstchen wird auf einen Holzspieß gesteckt, in einen dickflüssigen Teig getaucht und in heißem Öl frittiert. Man benötigt nicht viel mehr als beliebige (allerdings nicht zu große) Würstchen, Holzspieße und erhitztes Fett zum Frittieren der aufgespießten Köstlichkeiten. Das Wichtigste am neuen Trendfood ist natürlich die Teighülle. Und gerade diese ist wandelbar, wie die Autorin mit ihren rund 40 Rezepten beweist. Der «originale» namensgebende Maisteig kann jederzeit durch andere Teige ersetzt werden, wie z. B. durch einen dicken Tropfteig aus Weizenmehl, Eiern, Backpulver, Wasser und Gewürzen. Oder der Teig wird mit Parmesan, Kürbiskernen, Sesam, geraspeltem Gemüse, Haselnüssen oder knusprigen Röstzwiebeln verfeinert, um nur einige Beispiele zu nennen. Auch die «Fülle» ist wandelbar: Abgesehen von verschiedensten Würstchensorten, die im Handel erhältlich sind, finden sich in diesem Buch auch ein paar Rezepte für selbst gemachte Würstchen sowie «vegane Würstchen». Außerdem können genauso gut Fisch oder Gemüse in Teig getunkt und frittiert werden. Selbst süße Varianten hat sich die einfallsreiche Küchenmeisterin Joana Gimbutyte ausgedacht: Apfelstückchen, in süßen Schmarrenteig getunkt, werden zum typisch österreichischen «Kaiser Dog».
Besonders beliebt sind die aufgespießten, gebackenen Würstchen als Fingerfood auf Partys oder bei Kindern. Durch die vielen interessanten und variationsreichen Rezepte im Buch kann das trendige Streetfood durchaus zum Mittag- oder Abendessen avancieren: Die vielen kreativen Vorschläge für Zutaten, die die Würstchen umhüllen, bevor sie in den Teig getunkt werden, garantieren herrliche Geschmackserlebnisse.
