This book covers the management of all major renal diseases from an evidence-based and patient-centred approach. With contributions from leading international experts who have a real understanding of evidence-based medicine it provides recommendations on treatment regimens to adopt for individual patients that are most strongly supported by the evidence. The inclusion of the latest observational and epidemiological data, as well as randomized controlled trial evidence ensures that the book properly reflects the current state of evidence available for nephrological practice. It will be a useful aid to all clinicians, including those caring for transplant and pediatric patients, as it covers the major clinical questions encountered by nephrologists. This reference is an invaluable source of evidence-based information distilled into guidance for clinical practice which will be welcomed by practitioners, trainees and associated health professionals.
The Novartis Foundation Series is a popular collection of the proceedings from Novartis Foundation Symposia, in which groups of leading scientists from a range of topics across biology, chemistry and medicine assembled to present papers and discuss results. The Novartis Foundation, originally known as the Ciba Foundation, is well known to scientists and clinicians around the world.
Ethics for Psychologists, 2nd Edition is a comprehensive handbook covering the full range of ethical challenges that confront psychologists in practice and research Written for all psychology practitioners and researchers Addresses new concerns such as 'whistleblowing', quantifying ethics, and Internet-related issues Features greatly expanded section of case studies, resolutions, and work exercises Suitable for all English-speaking countries beyond just North America Includes guidance on a variety of national ethics codes, including the European Meta-Code of Ethics and the UN Declaration of Human Rights
This is a guide for all doctors – GPs and hospital doctors alike, on the law and how it affects them. It is a practical guide, and it approaches its subject with the use of realistic scenarios throughout. These relevant case histories are used as a basis for discussion and explanation of the legal implications of a doctors actions. Guidelines for best practice are given. This is not a theoretical book. Its aim is to give the reader an understanding of the way in which they may be legally challenged as health professionals, and how to minimize this risk. Unlike many law books, «Law for Doctors» assumes little or no knowledge of law and legal terms.

General practitioners and other primary care professionals have a leading role in contemporary health care, which Trisha Greenhalgh explores in this highly praised new text. She provides perceptive and engaging insights into primary health care, focussing on: • its intellectual roots • its impact on the individual, the family and the community • the role of the multidisciplinary team • contemporary topics such as homelessness, ethnic health and electronic records. Concise summaries, highlighted boxes, extensive referencing and a dedicated section on effective learning make this essential reading for postgraduate students, tutors and researchers in primary care. ___ From the foreword by Julian Tudor Hart “Trish Greenhalgh, in her frequent columns in the British Medical Journal…more than any other medical journalist spoke to her fellow GPs in the language of experience, but never without linking this to our expanding knowledge from the whole of human science. When I compare the outlines of primary care so lucidly presented in this wonderful book, obviously derived from rich experience of real teaching and learning, with the grand guignol theatre of London medical schools when I was a student 1947-52, the advance is stunning.” ___ «Trish Greenhalgh is one of the international stars of general practice and a very clever thinker. This new book is a wonderful resource for primary health care and general practice. Every general practice registrar should read this book and so should every general practice teacher and primary care researcher.» Professor Michael Kidd, Head of the Department of General Practice, University of Sydney and Immediate Past President of The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners “This important new book by one of primary care's most accomplished authors sets out clearly the academic basis for further developments in primary health care. Health systems will only function effectively if they recognise the importance of high quality primary care so I strongly recommend this book to students, teachers, researchers, practitioners and policy makers.” Professor Martin Marshall, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, UK
This is the first book to address all aspects of the biology of autoantibodies in a single volume, including a discussion of immunology, experimental models, clinical aspects, and the use of autoantibodies as probes in molecular and cellular biology. The editor, currently professor at the W.M. Keck Autoimmune Disease Center of The Scripps Research Institute, has assembled an all-star team of authors to report on the latest research, technologies, and applications. Following an introductory chapter, the book goes on to cover such topics as cellular mechanisms of autoantibody production, clinical and diagnostic usefulness in human disease, and animal models used to study the elicitation of autoantibodies. The whole is rounded off with a look at future perspectives. With its comprehensive coverage, this volume will appeal not only to immunologists and clinicians but also to cell and molecular biologists.
This is the first comprehensive book about the relationship between apoptosis and autoimmune diseases. It offers a unique up-to-date overview on research results on the defective execution of apoptosis and the incomplete clearance of apoptotic cells. The molecular and cellular mechanisms involved are described in detail. As a possible consequence of apoptotic dysfunction, the development of severe autoimmune diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus) is discussed. An outlook on future research topics includes the evaluation of novel therapeutic strategies.
Bioinformatics Software Engineering: Delivering Effective Applications will be useful to anyone who wants to understand how successful software can be developed in a rapidly changing environment. A handbook, not a textbook, it is not tied to any particular operating system, platform, language, or methodology. Instead it focuses on principles and practices that have been proven in the real world. It is pragmatic, emphasizing the importance of what the author calls Adaptive Programming – doing what works in your situation, and it is concise, covering the whole software development lifecycle in one slim volume. At each stage, it describes common pitfalls, explains how these can be avoided, and suggests simple techniques which make it easier to deliver better solutions. «Well thought-out … addresses many of the key issues facing developers of bioinformatics software.» (Simon Dear, Director, UK Technology and Development, Bioinformatics Engineering and Integration, Genetics Research, GlaxoSmithKline) Here are some examples from the book itself. On software development: “Writing software properly involves talking to people – often lots of people – and plenty of non-coding work on your part. It requires the ability to dream up new solutions to problems so complicated that they are hard to describe.” From description to specification: “Look for verbs – action words, such as ‘does’, ‘is’ and ‘views’. Identify nouns – naming words, like ‘user’, ‘home’ and ‘sequence’. List the adjectives – describing words, for example ‘quick’, ‘simple’ or ‘precise’. The verbs are the functions that must be provided by your application. The nouns define the parameters to those functions, and the adjectives specify the constraint conditions under which your program must operate.” On how to start writing software: “Handle errors. Take in data. Show output. Get going!” On testing: “It may not be physically possible to test every potential combination of situations that could occur as users interact with a program. But one thing that can be done is to test an application at the agreed extremes of its capability: the maximum number of simultaneous users it has to support, the minimum system configuration it must run on, the lowest communication speed it must cope with, and the most complex operations it must perform. If your program can cope with conditions at the edge of its performance envelope, it is less likely to encounter difficulties in dealing with less challenging situations.” On showing early versions of software to users: “It can be hard explaining the software development process to people who are unfamiliar with it. Code that to you is nearly finished is simply not working to them, and seeing their dream in bits on the workbench can be disappointing to customers, especially when they were expecting to be able to take it for a test drive.” On bugs: “If your users find a genuinely reproducible bug in production code, apologize, fix it fast, and then fix the system that allowed it through. And tell your customers what you are doing, and why, so they will be confident that it will not happen again. Everybody makes mistakes. Don’t make the same ones twice.” And one last thought on successful software development: "You have to be a detective, following up clues and examining evidence to discover what has gone wrong and why. And you have to be a politician, underst
