Neighbors who are worlds apart...
Opposites attract in Amish Country Courtships
Widower Seth Helmuth needs a mother for his sons, but for now, hiring the Englischer next door as their nanny will have to do. Trina Smith plans to stay in Amish country only long enough to claim her inheritance and sell her grandfather’s house. But as she falls for Seth, his twin boys and Amish life, will she inherit a home and a family?
CARRIE LIGHTE lives in Massachusetts, where her neighbors include several Mennonite farming families. She loves traveling and first learned about Amish culture when she visited Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, as a young girl. When she isn’t writing or reading, she enjoys baking bread, playing word games and hiking, but her all-time favorite activity is bodyboarding with her loved ones when the surf’s up at Coast Guard Beach on Cape Cod.

“Is something wrong?”
Seth couldn’t look at Trina for fear the hole in his heart would grow bigger and swallow him up. “I’m sorry, Trina. I shouldn’t have and I’m sorry.”
“Shouldn’t have what?” she asked.
Was she being coy? Or hadn’t she felt what he felt? No, he couldn’t believe that, even if she was going to make him say it aloud.
“I’m sorry for what happened yesterday.
I promise you it won’t ever happen again.”
Trina stumbled backward as if she’d been struck and her mouth fell open. In the dimming light he noticed her cheeks suddenly glistened with tears.
“I understand, Seth, why you and I can never be... I understand that you’re Amish and I’m Englisch. But I’m not sorry about the affection you’ve shown me. And I’m not sorry you know
I feel the same way about you.”
Watching her dash back toward her house, Seth fought the impulse to follow her and profess his affection—his love—too.
Letting her go was the most difficult thing he’d ever done...
Some characters come to life more easily than others. Seth and Trina’s story seemed to flow from my imagination almost as quickly as I could type it. I empathized with Trina as she encountered a different culture and location, and I understood how Seth felt to be in the position of having a new neighbor move in next door. Both situations can be intimidating, awkward and stressful, but they can also provide opportunities for growth, learning and, yes, even love.
I often daydream about what it would be like to live as an Amish person. I admire so many aspects of the Amish lifestyle, especially their emphasis on faith, family and simplicity. (Not to mention their baking abilities!) But I don’t think I’d fare well without electricity and modern transportation. So, for now, I’ll keep learning about the Amish from books and from my travels.
Thank you for reading the Amish Country Courtships miniseries; there’s one more book to come and I hope you’ll enjoy it.
Blessings,
Carrie Lighte
