This book is based on my life story from being adopted into a wonderful unconditional loving family to being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and eventually into a life of drugs and alcohol, running away, theft, deceit, adultery, and prostitution—becoming a very selfish and abusive person to those who tried so hard to love me and breaking lots of hearts.
I struggled with this lifestyle I chose for fifty years without getting myself hurt or incarcerated; but in the end, I paid the most ultimate price for my sins, and I was then finally ready to let Jesus take over. It’s been two and half years since the tragedy that had me try to take my own life got somehow intervened. I found a church and got sober and baptized.
I have received miracle after miracle since I turned my life over to God and decided to do it His way.
No matter who you are or what you have done, Jesus is real and is just waiting for you to invite Him in and start something beautiful in your life. It is never too late.
This book is completely anonymous to protect the names of those involved in my world of sin.
God compelled me to write this in hopes that I may plant a seed and hopefully even show one person who lived a life like mine that you are loved, you are worthy, and you can have a life beyond your wildest dreams if you decide to love and follow Jesus.
He has given me so many riches, not the kind money can buy, the kind that can only be given to you by the Lord.
Everything I write in here is true and not fabricated; it’s all real, Jesus is real. Just say His name, and He will come.
I hope this book touches your life like it has mine and you can have a life full of love and laughter, no more pain or fear.
The miracles are still happening, so many, so quick I could have written another four chapters since I finished. It has just blown me away, and I hope it does for you too. You’re never too old, and it’s never too late.
God bless you all.

This is a handbook that shows the reader how to construct an intellectual pedigree. It is also a history of science monograph because the completed intellectual pedigrees can be used individually or collectively to trace the influences of mentoring in the life sciences. The author uses Hermann Joseph Muller (1890–1967) (which includes his own intellectual pedigree) to show how knowledge was shifted from Italy to Germany and England, to France, and then to the American Colonies. Through Muller, the author goes in two directions, one leading to Huxley, Darwin, and Newton. The second leads to Agassiz, Malpighi, Borelli, and Galileo. The author also shows, from comparing 60 additional intellectual pedigrees, that about one third go to Newton, one third to Galileo and the rest to other icons of the past (e.g., Linnaeus, Lavoisier, Gay-Loussac, Leibniz). It shows how small was the pool of available scientists in the universities before the mid-19th century. This book will stimulate graduate students and faculty to construct their own intellectual pedigrees. It will also be of interest to historians and philosophers of science. The book discusses the role of mentoring, dividing this into inputs of intellectual development as well as outputs of development, using timelines arranged as circles. For each mentor, a brief account is given of that person's work and relation to the subject of the pedigree.Contents:

Preface

What are Intellectual Pedigrees?

The Origin of Academic Pedigrees

How to Prepare Your Academic Pedigree

First Mentoring Influence on Elof Carlson — Morris Gabriel Cohen

Second Mentoring Influence on Elof Carlson: Hermann Joseph Muller

Muller's Intellectual Pedigree Through Morgan

Muller's Mentor Lineage to Morgan Via H Newell Martin

Muller's Lineage from Morgan's Second Mentor, William Keith Brooks

My Connection to Muller's Academic Pedigree

My Academic Descendants

Representing Inputs to My Academic Life

List of Inputs into My Life

Assessing Inputs into My Life

Assessing Outputs in My Life

Inputs into Muller's Life

Comments for Muller's Outputs

Evaluating the Outputs of Scientific Careers

Reflections on Constructing Intellectual Pedigrees

Appendices:

Using Non-illustrated Vertical Intellectual Pedigrees

Reference Intellectual Pedigree for Hermann Joseph Muller

Intellectual Pedigrees

Pedigree of Charlotte Auerbach

Legend for Pedigree of Oswald Avery

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of William Bateson

Legend for Pedigree of George Beadle

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of Seymour Benzer

Legend for Pedigree of Elizabeth Blackburn

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of Albert Blakeslee

Legend for Pedigree of Theodor Boveri

Comments on Intellectual Pedigree of Norman Borlaug

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of Sydney Brenner

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of Elof Carlson

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of William Castle

Legend for Pedigree of Luigi Cavalli-Sforza

Legend for Ralph Cleland Intellectual Pedigree

Legend for Carl Correns Intellectual Pedigree

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of F A E Crew

Legend for Pedigree of Francis Crick

Legend for James Crow Pedigree

Legend for Charles Davenport Pedigree

Legend for Pedigree of Max Delbrück

Legend for Hugo de Vries

Legend for Pedigree of Theodosius Dobzhansky

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of Hans Driesch

Legend for Edward Murray East

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree for Ronald A Fisher

Legend for Rosalind Franklin Pedigree

Legend for Pedigree of Francis Galton

Legend for Pedigree of Archibald Garrod

Legend for Pedigree of Karl Gegenbaur

Legend for Pedigree of Asa Gray

Legend for Pedigree of Ernst Haeckel

Legend for J B S Haldane Intellectual Pedigree

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree for Alfred Hershey

Legend for François Jacob Pedigree

Legend for Pedigree of Wilhelm Johannsen

Legend for Pedigree of Motoo Kimura

Legend for Joshua Lederberg Pedigree

Legend for Pedigree of E B Lewis

Legend for Academic Pedigree of Salvador Luria

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of Edward Laurens Mark

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree for Barbara McClintock

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of Victor McKusick

Legend for Gregor Mendel Pedigree

Legend for Jacques Monod Pedigree

Legend for Thomas Hunt Morgan

Legend for Pedigree of Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard

Legend for T S Painter Pedigree

Intellectual Pedigree of Linus Pauling

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of Lionel Penrose

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of Richard Roberts

Legend for Erwin Schrödinger

Commentary on Tracy Sonneborn Pedigree

Legend for Lewis J Stadler Pedigree

Legend for M S Swaminathan Pedigree

Legend for Pedigree of C C Tan

Legend for Pedigree of Nikolai Vavilov

Legend for Academic Pedigree of Conrad Waddington

Legend for J D Watson Pedigree

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of August Weismann

Legend for Intellectual Pedigree of Jan Witkowski

Legend for Sewall Wright Pedigree

Afterword

References and Recommended Reading

Sources of Illustrations

About the Author

Index

Readership: Graduate students, college teachers and research scientists interested in preparing their own scientific pedigrees.Intellectual Pedigrees;Mentoring;Science History;Scholarly Research;Science Education;History of Universities;Graduate Education;Medieval University;Scientific Academies;Liberal Arts Education;University Degrees;Research Institutions;PhD Degree;History of Genetics;Academic Pedigrees00

Many Canadians will remember Reg Sherren as host of the popular CBC TV program Country Canada , when he criss-crossed the nation sniffing out amazing but little-known stories of life in small towns and rural areas. Others will recall his many years as feature reporter for CBC’s flagship news program, The National , collecting stories like that of Montreal inventor Catalin Alexandru Duru magically soaring above the earth on his home-made hoverboard to set a new Guinness World Record. In the course of his eventful career, Sherren did everything from guest hosting network radio shows like Cross Country Checkup to reporting from war zones, and his experiences make for a book bristling with memorable characters, unbelievable events and provocative reflection. Breaking news, politics, crime, economics—Sherren covered it all, and always with what Peter Mansbridge called “his unique ability to weave fascinating detail into the fabric of the people and places that make our nation so diverse and so interesting.” In this memoir, Sherren shares behind-the-scenes stories of his career in television journalism and the many Canadians he met along the way, from the time he rode on the back of a humpback whale to a journey down the world’s longest ice road in a solar-powered car. Sherren also provides insight into the changing business of broadcasting, having witnessed up-close how the industry has evolved, and why it is more important now than ever. That Wasn’t the Plan will appeal to industry insiders, CBC fans, history buffs and anyone who simply enjoys a good rollicking read.
The endearing and unflappable Dr. Annick Boudreau regularly confronts a myriad of mental health issues in her psychology practice at the West Coast Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Clinic in Vancouver, British Columbia. But even Annick is stunned when Sanjay, a young patient who suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, is arrested for the brutal murder of his roommate. While Sanjay is tortured by repeated violent thoughts, everything Annick knows about her patient and his illness has her convinced that he’s innocent. But the police and prosecutor are convinced that they have caught the perpetrator and aren’t interested in looking very hard. Unable to talk to the authorities because of doctor-patient confidentiality, Annick feels compelled to investigate on her own, finding herself drawn into the darker side of her postcard-perfect city in the process. Primary Obsessions is the first book in a series of mysteries starring Dr. Annick Boudreau and involving themes of mental health. Author (and longtime CBT patient) Charles Demers deftly reveals a particular aspect of psychology practice in each book, illuminating shadowy subject matter with masterful sensitivity and sharp wit. Primary Obsessions is an engrossing page-turner and a refreshing reboot of the sleuth genre.
The conversion of Spanish Roma to Pentecostal Evangelical Protestantism is one of the most unknown yet important modern religious movements. Its current spectacular transnational growth is due, among others factors, to the fact that it is directed, organized, and composed of Gypsies. This book provides one of the first serious analyses of an important historical, theological, and ethnographic account of the Pentecostal Revival movement that has been sweeping through the Southern European Roma/Gypsy.
Integrating Literacy Naturally is a guide for nurturing a love of literacy in both teachers and young children. More than a hundred children’s book titles and other resources serve as springboards for cultivating that love and meeting individual literacy needs in developmentally appropriate ways. And, educator spotlight stories show how theories move to practice. Pinkerton and Hewitt draw on their love of literacy and over four decades of combined experience to help readers navigate individualized instruction, purposeful play, literacy integration, classroom libraries, and a reimagined workshop approach. Examples for how to do all of this with children’s texts are presented throughout the book. Eight guiding principles provide an easy path to becoming an intentional, authentic teacher who focuses on the individual needs of children and avoids one-sized literacy instruction. The principles grew from heart to heart conversations the authors had about joyful reading and writing experiences being reduced to worksheets and rote memorization in many classrooms. This book moves teachers far away from drill the skill literacy. Use it as a guide on your path to making literacy learning both playful and intentional in the early childhood classroom.
