Scandal and Silence. Media Responses to Presidential Misconduct

Robert Entman M.

This timely and engaging book challenges the conventional wisdom on media and scandal in the United States. The common view holds that media crave and actively pursue scandals whenever they sense corruption. Scandal and Silence argues for a different perspective. Using case studies from the period 1988-2008, it shows that: Media neglect most corruption, providing too little, not too much scandal coverage; Scandals arise from rational, controlled processes, not emotional frenzies – and when scandals happen, it’s not the media but governments and political parties that drive the process and any excesses that might occur; Significant scandals are indeed difficult for news organizations to initiate and harder for them to maintain and bring to appropriate closure; For these reasons cover-ups and lying often work, and truth remains essentially unrecorded, unremembered. Sometimes, bad behavior stimulates an avalanche of media attention with demonstrable political consequences, yet other times, equally shoddy activity receives little notice. This book advances a theoretical model to explain these differences, revealing an underlying logic to what might seem arbitrary and capricious journalism. Through case studies of the draft and military scandals involving Dan Quayle, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and John Kerry; alleged sexual misconduct of politicians including but not limited to Clinton; and questionable financial dealings of Clinton and George W Bush, the book builds a new understanding of media scandals which will be essential reading for anyone concerned with the relationship between media and democracy today.

Computational Strategies for Spectroscopy. from Small Molecules to Nano Systems

Vincenzo Barone

Computational spectroscopy is a rapidly evolving field that is becoming a versatile and widespread tool for the assignment of experimental spectra and their interpretation as related to chemical physical effects. This book is devoted to the most significant methodological contributions in the field, and to the computation of IR, UV-VIS, NMR and EPR spectral parameters with reference to the underlying vibronic and environmental effects. Each section starts with a chapter written by an experimental spectroscopist dealing with present challenges in the different fields; comprehensive coverage of conventional and advanced spectroscopic techniques is provided by means of dedicated chapters written by experts. Computational chemists, analytical chemists and spectroscopists, physicists, materials scientists, and graduate students will benefit from this thorough resource.

Engineering the CMOS Library. Enhancing Digital Design Kits for Competitive Silicon

David Doman

Shows readers how to gain the competitive edge in the integrated circuit marketplace This book offers a wholly unique perspective on the digital design kit. It points to hidden value in the safety margins of standard-cell libraries and shows design engineers and managers how to use this knowledge to beat the competition. Engineering the CMOS Library reveals step by step how the generic, foundry-provided standard-cell library is built, and how to extract value from existing std-cells and EDA tools in order to produce tighter-margined, smaller, faster, less power-hungry, and more yield-producing integrated circuits. It explores all aspects of the digital design kit, including the different views of CMOS std-cell libraries along with coverage of IO libraries, memory compilers, and small analog blocks. Readers will learn: How to work with overdesigned std-cell libraries to improve profitability while maintaining safety How functions usually found in std-cell libraries cover the design environment, and how to add any missing functions How to harness the characterization technique used by vendors to add characterization without having to get it from the vendor How to use verification and validation techniques to ensure proper descriptive views and even fix inconsistencies in vendor release views How to correct for possible conflicts arising from multiple versions and different vendor sources in any given integrated circuit design Complete with real-world case studies, examples, and suggestions for further research, Engineering the CMOS Library will help readers become more astute designers.

Strategy. Key Thinkers

Tom Kane

Over twenty two centuries ago, the Greek general Pyrrhus questioned the real gains of military victory. Today we might reflect on the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in much the same way. War is not only cruel but capricious; its outcomes are often bitter and frustrating, even for the winning side. Strategy: Key Thinkers expertly introduces the ideas of major strategic thinkers whose work explores the complex challenges associated with the use of military force. Early chapters deal with the foundational work of Sun Tzu (Sunzi), Thucydides, Vegetius, Machiavelli and Carl von Clausewitz and their relevance to problems facing Western militaries today. The book then considers broader issues, such as the distinctive importance of air and maritime operations, the difficulty of waging offensive land warfare in the face of modern firepower, the implications of nuclear weapons, and the potential of irregular warfare. It concludes by highlighting key themes which connect – and distinguish – the works under consideration, noting how these similarities and differences can inform the strategic debates of the early twenty-first century.

Cosmopolitanism. Ideals and Realities

David Held

This book sets out the case for a cosmopolitan approach to contemporary global politics. It presents a systematic theory of cosmopolitanism, explicating its core principles and justifications, and examines the role many of these principles have played in the development of global politics, such as framing the human rights regime. The framework is then used to address some of the most pressing issues of our time: the crisis of financial markets, climate change and the fallout from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In each case, Held argues that realistic politics is exhausted, and that cosmopolitanism is the new realism. See also Garrett Wallace Brown and David Held's The Cosmopolitanism Reader.
