When man's emerging star-empire met that of the savage Cromanths, the alien hordes began a war of extinction against humankind. So overwhelming was their power that Earth's outposts and finally the Earth itself were utterly destroyed. But one starship managed to escape, carrying colonists toward some distant habitable planet, if such a place existed, and if the Cromanths didn't find them first. The mission was successful and the colony established. Mankind began to adapt to its new world, developed new abilities, and forgot much of its past on Earth. <P> But then a Cromanth ship landed on the new planet–and the last remnants of humanity were in jeopardy once more. Could humankind somehow survive this savage new onslaught by the Cromanthian Empire? <P> A first major SF novel by a modern master of the genre!
In 1888, while a student, H.G. Wells published «The Chronic Argonauts,» a 3-part story serialized in <i>The Science Schools Journal.</i> He would later return to the themes and recreate the story as the classic novel, <i>The Time Machine</i>. (After <i>The Time Machine</i>'s publication, Wells tried to suppress «The Chronic Argonauts,» going so far as buying all copies he could find and destroying them.) Today, the story is a rarity in its original publication, but it is hardly a classic work in the same vein as its successor novel. As a literary curiosity, it commands some interest, but do not go into it expecting anything on the scale of Wells's later, greater novels.

The first book in the Tales of the Luren series. Mankind was being assailed by a disease that made the Bubonic Plague seem insignificant. People were dying by the thousands, especially in America and in England. They would choke, strangle to death, and then, horribly, burst apart as if blown up by gas! And the horror had been unwittingly caused by one man, Doctor Blair, who had, ironically, tried to invent something that would benefit mankind by eliminating all disease! Instead, the results of his experiment led to the world facing total disaster from…the «Dynasty of the Small»! In addition to the title novella, this collection includes the stories «Ice Maiden,» «The Vicious Circle,» «Chaos,» and «Sweet Mystery of Life.» Great reading from the classic era of the science-fiction magazines.

Monument is a science fiction novel about destructive tourism – a serious subject, but as usual with Biggle, handled in a lighter vein, and at times frankly humorous. A classic science fiction novel from the author of ALL THE COLORS OF DARKNESS.
In his Foreword, Rich Horton says: «First rate stories…»Time Considered as a Series of Thermite Burns in No Particular Order" is a clever and very funny time travel romp; «The Beancounter's Cat» is set in a far future with Clarkean science sufficiently advanced to appear magical; «Walls of Flesh, Bars of Bone» (with Barbara Lamar) is another look at the mystery of human destiny; «Under the Moons of Venus» is a remarkable, evocative homage to one of SF's greats." Well-known editor Gardner Dozois has said of «The Beancounter's Cat» that it «…starts out reading like fantasy, and gradually turns into very far-future SF.» Also included is an original tale with Paul Di Filippo, «Luminous Fish,» taking Mike Moorcock's famous character Jerry Cornelius for a spin in the 21st century! Nine scintillating science fiction stories by a major writer in the field.

In the skies over Eden, the battle rages—and one war-weary fighter, Major Simon Roy, falls to ground in his wounded ship. There he takes refuge with a brave family of farmers living peacefully in the idyllic countryside. When the aliens overwhelm the planet, the impromptu companions find themselves isolated and in peril. As they fight for survival, can Simon rediscover his humanity, and find a way to make his own stand against an enemy that has never been defeated?
