The War with the Belatrin

Don Webb

The alien Belatrin are the «Other.» They look like us, they organize their society like ours, yet even the slightest contact with them leads humans to madness. Here are seven encounters from a war in space that leads to a species-changing moment of synthesis and transformation, including the classic, award-winning novella, «The Five Biographies of General Gerrhan.» First-rate space opera in the grand style!

New Worlds: Before the New Wave, 1960-1964

Damien Broderick

In the mid-1960s, British science fiction and fantasy were convulsed by the «New Wave.» This movement emerged from the SF magazines edited by John Carnell. Such brilliant NEW WORLDS and SCIENCE FANTASY writers as J. G. Ballard, Brian W. Aldiss, John Brunner, and Michael Moorcock heralded the rise of this new kind of fantastic fiction. John Boston and Damien Broderick's concluding volume of their critical trilogy examines the history and development of these important magazines–and the fiction that they championed. By the end of this period (1964), Carnell had set the stage for that major development in UK science fiction–the new wave adventures of the transformed NEW WORLDS, under the editorship of Moorcock–and had himself shifted gear into the next mode of SF publishing as editor of the paperback anthology series, New Writings in SF. Boston and Broderick's series will become the definitive critical histories of these important British magazines. Complete with indices of names and titles cited.

The Napus

Leon Daudet

In Paris, on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, an old man suddenly vanishes without a trace: a new plague has reached France, and will soon grow to terrible proportions. The event is witnessed by a cytologist working at the Aristotle Institute, who is also a Polyplast–the result of an experiment in selective breeding intended to produce pacifists, but which has also had perverse results. As a result of his presence at the crucial event, the Polyplast becomes a privileged observer of the entire tragedy, of which he naturally sets out to write a personalized history, explaining how the new plague became the casus belli of yet another war in an endless series, fought with the aid of «Archimedes»: powerful, long-range weapons that would destroy the world in no time were it not for their habit of misfiring, and only killing tens of thousands of people instead of millions. The Napus, first published in 1927, remains one of the classics of absurdist science fiction.

Quorne Returns

John Russell Fearn

The bacterial intelligences of Neptune plan to conquer Earth by replacing humans in key positions with alien duplicates. A disturbing new element is introduced when the Neptunians themselves fall under the dictates of the sinister Sefner Quorne, whom the Golden Amazon believes to be dead. Once alerted to the threat, the Golden Amazon hits back with all the ruthless scientific ingenuity at her command. She creates an ultimate doomsday weapon–only to precipitate a reprisal from the denizens of another universe, plunging the Amazon, her husband Abna, and their daughter Viona into another astonishing science fiction adventure in the ongoing saga of the Golden Amazon. The sixth thrilling chapter in this exciting space opera!

Parasite Planet

John Russell Fearn

Reaching another solar system, the three Cosmic Crusaders discover a fantastic world of mental parasites drawing form and substance from our own Earth, fifty light years away. The planet is ruled by a being identical to the Golden Amazon herself–but an «Amazon» that is coldly scientific and vicious, mirroring the original Amazon as she had once been early in her career. They become locked in a deadly duel, and the Amazon and Abna are marooned by the double on a planet of monsters. And while the pair fight to survive, Viona becomes engaged to Mexone, a human inhabitant of another planet in the same system–only to face death with her fiancé as the Amazon II seeks to electrocute them. Can the Amazon and Abna escape from their prison world in time to rescue their daughter? Great action adventure from the golden age of science fiction!

The First Reginald Bretnor MEGAPACK ®

Reginald Bretnor

The late Reginald Bretnor (1911-1992) was never a prolific writer – he wrote only a handful of books and about 100 short stories (and more than 120 short-short «Feghoots» under his Grendel Briarton pseudonym) – over a 45-year writing career. In addition to wars, weaponry, and science fiction, Bretnor's broad interests included cats. (And puns. Did we mention the horrible puns?) These subjects are all touched on in this collection. The M.R. James Megapack

M.R. James

Montague Rhodes James (1862 – 1936), who wrote as M. R. James, was an English medieval scholar and provost of King's College, Cambridge (1905–1918), and of Eton College (1918–1936). He is best remembered for his ghost stories, which are regarded as among the best in the genre. James redefined the ghost story for the new century by abandoning many of the formal Gothic cliches of his predecessors and using more realistic contemporary settings. However, James's protagonists and plots tend to reflect his own antiquarian interests. Accordingly, he is known as the originator of the «antiquarian ghost story.»
This volume collects 27 of his classic tales, including:
CANON ALBERIC'S SCRAP-BOOK
LOST HEARTS
THE MEZZOTINT
THE ASH-TREE
NUMBER 13
COUNT MAGNUS
QUIS EST ISTE QUI VENIT
THE TREASURE OF ABBOT THOMAS
PART 2: THE FIVE JARS
THE DISCOVERY
THE FIRST JAR
THE SECOND JAR
THE SMALL PEOPLE
DANGER TO THE JARS
THE CAT, WAG, SLIM AND OTHERS
THE BAT-BALL
WAG AT HOME
PART 3: MORE GHOST STORIES OF AN ANTIQUARY
CASTING THE RUNES
THE ROSE GARDEN
THE TRACTATE MIDDOTH
THE STALLS OF BARCHESTER CATHEDRAL
MARTIN’S CLOSE
MR HUMPHREYS AND HIS INHERITANCE
PART 4: A THIN GHOST AND OTHERS
THE RESIDENCE AT WHITMINSTER
THE DIARY OF MR.
