Trekking in the Zillertal Alps

Allan Hartley

This guidebook describes two popular hut-to-hut treks in Austria's Zillertal Alps. Both take eight to ten days to complete, with the option to add in day excursions from the huts to climb local peaks on both sides of the border, including the Zillertal's highest summit, the Hochfeiler.
The Zillertal Rucksack Route, or Berliner Hoehen Weg, links eight huts without crossing glaciers or difficult passes. It starts above Mayrhofen and follows a circular route ending high above the charming village of Ginzling. The length of this tour is 70-80km, depending on your exact start and finish points, and ascends some 6700m.
The Zillertal South Tyrol Tour traverses the whole range along the Austro-Italian border, starting at Turistenraste then linking back to the Rucksack Route to make a circular tour. Overall it is about 55km long and ascends just over 5000m (not including any additional peaks.) It is a physically demanding trek, providing an excellent challenge to more experienced alpine walkers who wish to undertake a tour that is remote and challenging.

Walking in Hungary

Tom Chrystal

A guidebook to 34 days walks throughout upland Hungary from 4 – 24km in length (2.5 – 15 miles). The routes are set out by region. The highland areas are divided into two main regions: Northern Hungary (north and east of the Danube) including the Aggtelek karst, Borzsony, Matra, Bukk and Zemplen; and Transdanubia (west of the Danube) including the Bakony, Balaton Uplands, Buda Hills, Mecsek, Pilis and Vertes.
Most visitors are unaware of Hungary's secret highland landscape of rolling hills, high karst meadows, vineyards, crags, castles and villages. The volcanic mountains and limestone plateaus stretch in a chain from the Slovakian border to central-west and southern Hungary. The ancient trails of the country are now a network of walking paths with a good system of coloured waymarks. The guide gives a fascinating insight into the history and geography of the country, as well as supplying tips on walking in the countryside, and a list of useful words and phrases.

Ben Nevis and Glen Coe

Ronald Turnbull

This guidebook details 100 walking routes around Ben Nevis and Glen Coe, centred in 10 areas including Fort William and Glen Nevis, the Aonachs, the Mamores, Kinlochleven, Glen Coe, Glen Etive, Black Mount and Ben Cruachan. Routes are graded according to difficulty, and range between short, easy strolls and long, challenging walks with overnight bothy stays. The region's 44 Munro summits are covered, including 2 easy scrambles and the formidable traverse of Aonach Eagach's iconic jagged ridge.
Alongside step-by-step route descriptions and mapping, the guide presents practical advice on transport, access, safety and where to stay plus background information on the area's fascinating geology.
Many of the routes reflect the author's belief that the best rewards often lie off the popular tourist trails. Yet the highlights are all there: Buachaille Etive Mor, Aonach Eagach, the Mamores, the Grey Corries, Bidean nam Bian, Ben Starav, Carn Mor Dearg and of course, the mighty Ben Nevis. The book – like Glen Coe itself – encourages exploration and includes a helpful 'summit summary' to show different options and assist with route-planning.

The Kennet and Avon Canal

Steve Davison

This guidebook to walking along the Kennet & Avon Canal covers the 94 mile (152km) route from Reading to Bristol. The canal walk is split into 7 stages of fairly easy, level walking, of between 9¾ and 18½ miles, with advice on splitting on shortening the stages if needed. The book also includes 20 easy circular walks, ranging from 4¼ to 9 miles, taking in the best sections of the canal and visiting sites nearby, making this two guidebooks in one.
Alongside OS map extracts and detailed route descriptions, there are plenty of details on the history, heritage and wildlife encountered along the way. An itinerary planner is included for walkers who want to create longer or shorter stages, and there is useful practical information including details on accessing the walks by public transport and a list of accommodation available along the route. The result is a highly useful and fascinating companion to exploring the canal and its surroundings.
In the early 1800s the Kennet and Avon Canal provided an important direct trade route between London and Bristol. Today the waterway weaves its way through the rolling chalk contours of the North Wessex Downs to the southern edge of the Cotswolds, passing vibrant towns and cities as well as picture-postcard villages with thatched cottages, ancient churches and cosy pubs. Fascinating features – such as Crofton Pumping Station and Beam Engines, the impressive Caen Hill flight of locks at Devizes, the aqueducts at Avoncliff and Dundas, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Georgian Bath and Bristol's vibrant Floating Harbour – are explored as the canal makes its journey across southern England.
