Das Werk wurde nach 1849 in Frankreich und anderen europäischen Staaten verboten, stand auf der Liste der verbotenen Bücher der Katholischen Kirche und soll in Thüringen, in Erfurt, sogar öffentlich verbrannt worden sein… Die Handlung der Episode spielt zur Zeit Ludwigs XIV., vor dem Hintergrund blutiger Aufstände in der Bretagne um das Jahr 1675. «Der Schmiedehammer» wurde wegen des Verbots nie vollständig ins Deutsche übersetzt; dieses Buch ist, nach 170 Jahren, die erste vollständige Übertragung.
