chapter 1
GEORGE
This is a story about an eleven-year-old boy named George who was reared by his grandmother after his parents had abandoned him.
George was a slow student who made Ds and Fs in school. One day, George’s teacher told him in front of the entire class he needed to make an A to be promoted to the next grade.
After hearing this, the entire class started making fun of George. George became embarrassed and laid his head down on his desk.
When George got home, he told his grandmother that he had to make an A on his test to go to the next grade. His grandmother, being uneducated, told him, “Get the Bible and read Philippians 4 and 13.” She also told George, “Go into your closet and get down on your knees and pray to the Father in secret, and he shall reward thee openly.”
George also remembered a verse in the Bible that the preacher had read. “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth” (Mark 9:23).
When going back to school the next day, George’s classmates were teasing him. George told them out loud, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
George declared, “In the name of Jesus, I’m going to make an A on my test and promote to the next grade.”
That same day, George was the only student who made 100 on his exam.
