      Edwin O. Reischauer (1910–1990) was born and raised in Japan. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University and went on to teach there for decades. He served as the American Ambassador to Japan in the 1960s and was the author of numerous books on the history, culture, and people of Japan, including The Japanese Today: Change and Continuity and Japan: The Story of a Nation . In 1985, the John Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies opened the Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies, named in his honor.
