Bertrand William Sinclair was a Canadian novelist known for a series of westerns set in the United States, and also for a series of novels set in his home province of British Columbia. He had disapproved of previous westerns as he felt the action portrayed was far different that the lives cowboys actually led. When he moved to Vancouver, the settings of his works changed. He tended to write about social causes, and worked in the timber industry prior to writing Big Timber. Later, before writing about the fishing industry, he worked as a commercial fisherman. He was also formerly married to author Bertha M. Brown, better known under her pen name, B. M. Bower. Die ersten Bildergeschichten von Wilhelm Busch erschienen ab 1859 als Einblattdrucke. In Buchform wurden sie erstmals 1864 unter dem Titel Bilderpossen veröffentlicht. Schon seit den 1870er Jahren in ganz Deutschland berühmt, galt er bei seinem Tod dank seiner äußerst volkstümlichen Bildergeschichten als «Klassiker des deutschen Humors». Als Pionier des Comics schuf er bis heute populäre Werke. Oft griff er darin satirisch die Eigenschaften bestimmter Typen oder Gesellschaftsgruppen auf, etwa die Selbstzufriedenheit und Doppelmoral des Spießbürgers oder die Frömmelei von Geistlichen und Laien. Viele seiner Zweizeiler sind im Deutschen zu festen Redewendungen geworden, zum Beispiel «Vater werden ist nicht schwer, Vater sein dagegen sehr» oder «Dieses war der erste Streich, doch der zweite folgt sogleich». Seine vom Stil Heines und Schopenhauers beeinflusste Lyrik und Prosadichtung stießen beim Publikum, das mit seinem Namen komische Bildergeschichten verband, auf Unverständnis. Dass seine künstlerischen Hoffnungen enttäuscht wurden und er übersteigerte Erwartungen an sich selbst zurücknehmen musste, sublimierte er mit Humor. Dies spiegelt sich in seinen Bildergeschichten wieder.
