Is it really over? Have Hobart Lindsey and Marvia Plum solved their last case? Lindsey, the mild-mannered bachelor insurance adjuster. Plum, the tough inner-city cop and single mom. You can hardly think of an odder couple, but somehow they were able to bring out the best in each other. Through a series of eight novels that carried them from California to Louisiana, from Denver to Chicago to New York to Rome, they explored the eccentricities of American pop culture, from comic books to race movies, from classic cars to sleazy gangster novels. And now…is this really the end? One Murder at a Time chronicles eight shorter cases of Lindsey and Plum, originally published in magazines and anthologies in the United States and Great Britain. Bonus material in this surprising book are the complete text of «Death in the Ditch,» the McGuffin in The Cover Girl Killer, as well as «Yesterday Calling,» the complete radio scripts of The Radio Red Killer. And the biggest treat of all–an alternate ending that was omitted from The Emerald Cat Killer, something that will delight every Lindsey and Plum fan. First-rate mystery and suspense writing from a master of the genre!
"The Worm Ouroboros" is a heroic high fantasy novel by Eric Rucker Eddison, first published in 1922. The book describes the protracted war between the domineering King Gorice of Witchland and the Lords of Demonland in an imaginary world that appears mainly medieval and partly reminiscent of Norse sagas. The work is slightly related to Eddison's later Zimiamvian Trilogy, and collectively they are sometimes referred to as the Zimiamvian series.
Maria Black, Head of Roseway College for Young Ladies during World War II, and a textbook solver of crimes, finds herself faced with a problem after her own heart when the strange, haughty Frances Hasleigh, daughter of a somewhat mysterious British Major, enrolls in her school. Within a few days the girl is found hanged in a nearby wood, in circumstances that seem devoid of clues and without motive. Scotland Yard is called in to solve the horrifying crime, but Black Maria has her own unique system of finding a culprit. By degrees she follows a trail that leads her through a maze of intrigue. And then a second girl is found hanging in a school room…! The second novel in the classic Black Maria series!
At first, the two events seem apparently unconnected–except for their violent nature. The first is the escape of four vicious convicts from Halifax Prison in North Carolina; simultaneously, in the southern state of Virginia, a vicious mob lynches and burns a man alive. But when the escaped convicts steal a car and cross the state line, it automatically brings in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. As the strange interweavings of fate and coincidence result in ever more horrible murders, F.B.I. field agent Lief Sorensen strives desperately to untangle the twisting trail of escalating deaths. And when he and his men corner the villains in an abandoned chemical plant, the result is an…F.B.I. SHOWDOWN! Great shoot-'em-up action adventure from the 1950s!
As an honest cop, Captain Lanny Just has problems. His Police Chief and several of his men are on the take from local gangster kingpin, “Boss” Myrtle. Myrtle’s daughter Bonnie is in love with Lanny, but the young policeman feels he can't pursue the relationship because of her father’s criminal activities–of which Bonnie is unaware. Lanny’s problems multiply alarmingly as his hometown of Freshwater is threatened by a sudden influx of murderous criminals from New York–a gang of bank raiders and «Pretty Boy,» a psychotic murderer of young women. Then Bonnie goes missing… The only solution seems to be: CALL IN THE FEDS! Another classic action thriller torn from the pulp paperbacks of the 1950s!

The theme of this Megapack is classic mystery and crime fiction from the Victorian era. We have taken the liberty of extending the qualifying publication dates to the end of World War I, since that event marked more of a turning point in world literature than the advent of the Edwardian Age. For an illusionist to make a woman vanish from a cage is merely a parlor trick, because the person must go somewhere; but in this instance the woman really DOES disappear, in full view of an audience, and cannot be found afterwards. This seeming impossibility is the commencement of a completely baffling puzzle, which even Scotland Yard finds hard to crack. And then the magician himself is found murdered in his flat, lending credence to the notion that the woman has also been killed. Scotland Yard enlists the aid of the indomitable Dr. Carruthers, a genius who specializes in solving scientific puzzles. But can Carruthers unravel the diabolical plot–or will THE SILVERED CAGE, a solid metal structure allowing neither entry nor exit, continue to contain its mystery? A scientific detective thriller with several exciting plot twists!
