The Purple Glove Murders

Mary Wickizer Burgess

Two new short novels featuring attorney Gail Brevard. In THE PURPLE GLOVE MURDERS, Gail and her companion and law partner, Conrad «Connie» Osterlitz, are relaxing at their Southern California mountain hideaway when Gail hears of a nearby tragedy. Retired Justice Winston Craig, a friend of Gail's late father, has been discovered face down near his dock on exclusive Black Bear Lake. The judge's widow, Eva, asks for their help in finding the cause of his death. As Gail begins to uncover the details of Craig's life, a familiar pattern begins to emerge. Convinced that the judge was murdered because of something he knew from one of his old cases, Gail suddenly finds herself at risk. Then Connie is attacked by an unknown assailant, and as he lies near death, Gail must use all her resources to solve the crime before it's too late. A DEATH AT CLIFFSIDE: Gail and Connie are enjoying a working vacation in San Francisco with their associate, Charles Walton, and Charles's cousin, Nick. Nick asks Gail to look into the recent death of his ex-girlfriend, Cele, whose body has just been found dead at the bottom of a cliff south of the city. The police think that she fell or leapt to her death, but Nick believes she was murdered. Gail and friends begin investigating, but soon encounter resistance, both from the woman's family and from the authorities. Why doesn't anyone want to talk about Cele's passing? And why has the woman's death apparently been covered up? Two great reads from a California native!

Murder Applied For

Lloyd Biggle, jr.

The patrol car swerved, came to a halt; Ron Webber opened his eyes and looked about dazedly: «Where are we?» «Municipal Hospital,» the officer said. It's Frank…» Webber performs background checks for insurance companies, alongside his best friend, Frank Milford. Now Frank's dead, and so's the young woman whom he was investigating. The Amazing Martin Brett

Ernest Dudley

The creator of the famous criminologist, Dr. Morelle, here gives us four stories of another brilliant detective, whom the newspapers have dubbed «The Amazing Martin Brett.» Brett appears to be selfish and lazy, and his effort at solving crimes is entirely motivated by the size of his fee. His attractive secretary (and narrator) is often the butt of his sardonic humor and sexist remarks, which she finds unnecessary and uncalled for. But she puts up with him because she suspects Brett has a secret sorrow, some woman in his past…and, as a detective, he ALWAYS solves his cases!

The Beard of the Prophet

Superintendent Budd stations himself outside the door of his bedroom, while Sergeant Leek remains on alert outside the room's only external window. Yet Hayles is found dead, his head battered by some tremendous blow. Apart from his corpse, the room is empty, devoid of any possible weapon. A search reveals no hidden panels, so how has the man been killed? A classic impossible crime novel featuring Verner's most famous detective!

Vedun's new military leader–the half-breed samurai, Gonji–must seek the aid of the powerful nightmarish creature, Simon Sardonis, who shuns all mankind. But when the inevitable clash explodes, when the ghastly struggle to protect and evacuate hundreds of innocents begins, will Gonji's efforts be enough? Will treachery prove the city's undoing? Can any remnant of a ravaged and brutalized populace be saved from the horror? Or will Gonji's now passionately embraced quest abruptly end with the…DEATHWIND OF VEDUN? The startling conclusion to a great epic fantasy trilogy! German fantasy writer Kai Meyer writes: «GONJI is the most important rediscovery of classic fantasy since Conan.
