Parameter Estimation for Scientists and Engineers

The subject of this book is estimating parameters of expectation models of statistical observations. The book describes the most important aspects of the subject for applied scientists and engineers. This group of users is often not aware of estimators other than least squares. Therefore one purpose of this book is to show that statistical parameter estimation has much more to offer than least squares estimation alone. In the approach of this book, knowledge of the distribution of the observations is involved in the choice of estimators. A further advantage of the chosen approach is that it unifies the underlying theory and reduces it to a relatively small collection of coherent, generally applicable principles and notions.

Multidisciplinary Design Optimization in Computational Mechanics

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the mathematical and algorithmic methods for the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) of complex mechanical systems such as aircraft or car engines. We have focused on the presentation of strategies efficiently and economically managing the different levels of complexity in coupled disciplines (e.g. structure, fluid, thermal, acoustics, etc.), ranging from Reduced Order Models (ROM) to full-scale Finite Element (FE) or Finite Volume (FV) simulations. Building Physics -- Heat, Air and Moisture

Bad experiences with construction quality, the energy crises of 1973 and 1979, complaints about 'sick buildings', thermal, acoustical, visual and olfactory discomfort, the move towards more sustainability, have all accelerated the development of a field, which until 35 years ago was hardly more than an academic exercise: building physics. Through the application of existing physical knowledge and the combination with information coming from other disciplines, the field helps to understand the physical performance of building parts, buildings and the built environment, and translates it into correct design and construction. This book is the result of thirty years teaching, research and consultancy activity of the author. The book discusses the theory behind the heat and mass transport in and through building components. Steady and non steady state heat conduction, heat convection and thermal radiation are discussed in depth, followed by typical building-related thermal concepts such as reference temperatures, surface film coefficients, the thermal transmissivity, the solar transmissivity, thermal bridging and the periodic thermal properties. Water vapour and water vapour flow and moisture flow in and through building materials and building components is analyzed in depth, mixed up with several engineering concepts which allow a first order analysis of phenomena such as the vapour balance, the mold, mildew and dust mites risk, surface condensation, sorption, capillary suction, rain absorption and drying. In a last section, heat and mass transfer are combined into one overall model staying closest to the real hygrothermal response of building components, as observed in field experiments. The book combines the theory of heat and mass transfer with typical building engineering applications. The line from theory to application is dressed in a correct and clear way. In the theory, oversimplification is avoided. This book is the result of thirty years teaching, research and consultancy activity of the author.

Boundary Value Problems for Transonic Flow

Transonic flow occurs around moving objects as they approach and cross the sound barrier. Serious problems can occur at this point, such as shock-induced flow separation which can cause the aircraft to spin out of control. Another important practical problem is the achievement of higher aerodynamic performance of aircraft at cruise conditions, which leads to considerable fuel savings. The success in application of numerical methods for simulation of transonic flow and aircraft design depends on developments in the underlying mathematical theory. This book presents a breakthrough in the solvability analysis of boundary value problems, which makes it possible to establish convergence of finite element approximations for shock-free flow and to provide a framework for putting the existing numerical methods on a more sound basis. Also, physical aspects concerned with patterns of formation and propagation of weak shock waves are analysed. This contributes to the understanding of the extreme sensitivity of transonic flow to perturbation of freestream conditions. The developed theoretical knowledge base yields promising concepts of the airfoil design and active flow control by airfoil/wing shape modifications or suction/blowing through a perforated surface. Over the last 50 years, the methods of investigating dynamic properties have resulted in significant advances. This book explores dynamic testing, the methods used, and the experiments performed, placing a particular emphasis on the context of bounded medium elastodynamics. The International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib) is a pre-normative organization. 'Pre-normative' implies pioneering work in codification. This work has now been realized with the fib Model Code 2010. The objectives of the fib Model Code 2010 are to serve as a basis for future codes for concrete structures, and present new developments with regard to concrete structures, structural materials and new ideas in order to achieve optimum behaviour. The fib Model Code 2010 is now the most comprehensive code on concrete structures, including their complete life cycle: conceptual design, dimensioning, construction, conservation and dismantlement. It is expected to become an important document for both national and international code committees, practitioners and researchers. The fib Model Code 2010 was produced during the last ten years through an exceptional effort by Joost Walraven (Convener; Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands), Agnieszka Bigaj-van Vliet (Technical Secretary; TNO Built Environment and Geosciences, The Netherlands) as well as experts out of 44 countries from five continents.
