No Body's Perfect

Vivienne Lewis

Body image doesn’t discriminate gender or age. Yet its importance to our health, both mental and physical, is vital. A negative body image in childhood can lead to a lifetime of struggle and self-doubt. In today’s image-conscious world it is important that we help children and youngsters feel better about their bodies. No Body’s Perfect is designed to do just that. Written for teachers, counsellors, parents, and carers it promotes positive body image and good mental health using easy to implement evidence-based strategies. It is appropriate for use with children aged six years and up and features stories and examples from children, young people, parents and teachers of both genders, different cultural backgrounds, and a range of ages to help inspire and engage. Recommendations are also made for educators to foster healthy body image and well-being at the school, class and student level. Topics covered include: • how to be a positive role model to others, • how to handle teasing and body bashing, • the dangers of dieting, • how to be media literate, • why and where to go to for help.

Values and Vulnerabilities

Forced migration is a global issue.
About 34 million of the world’s inhabitants were identified in 2010 by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees as either refugees, internally displaced persons, asylum seekers or stateless people. Systematic inquiries are urgently needed to understand and improve the circumstances in which these people live, and to guide national and international policies and programs
However, there are many ethical complications in conducting research with uprooted people, who have often been exposed to persecution and marginalisation in conflict situations, refugee camps, immigration detention settings, and following resettlement. This book brings together for the first time key scholars across a range of disciplines including anthropology, bioethics, public health, criminology, psychology, socio-linguistics, philosophy, psychiatry, social policy and social work to discuss the ethical dimensions, challenges and tensions of such research.
It encompasses the theoretical, conceptual, practical, and applied aspects of research ethics, while integrating different disciplinary perspectives. It is intended as a resource not only for researchers, students and practitioners but also for those conducting cross-cultural research more broadly. Many of its arguments, examples and concerns are pertinent to research with other vulnerable or marginalised populations.

Confidentiality for Mental Health Professionals

Annegret Kampf

Those who work in the mental health sector are constantly exposed to personal information about the experiences, behaviour and relationships of their clients. It is therefore unsurprising that mental health professionals will sometimes need to consider whether they are ethically or legally obliged to disclose certain information to third parties. Yet how is this done? In what circumstances is a therapist, counsellor, or nurse obliged to disclose confidential information and to whom? A profession's codes of ethics or a legal text is rarely able to provide meaningful practical guidance. The authors, experienced professionals in law and mental health, have focused on the actual decision-making process of disclosing confidential information to allow mental health professionals to find a solution that is ethically and legally sound and able to be recognised as such by external authorities. The book is relevant to a wide range of professionals working in the mental health sector such as psychologists, social workers, counsellors, mental health nurses, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, and students.

How You Created Your Own Personality

Ernest Pecci MD

Personality constitutes a specific constellation of behaviors. When these conform to societal norms a person is considered to have a well-functioning personality. Yet, in every complex civilization there is the suppression of the soul within a prison of flesh, crying out for help. There is no general theory of personality that can define all of them. However, within each individual is the ability to trace the genesis of essentially all of his/her “neurotic” traits, fears, and seemingly inexplicable behavior patterns through the use of directed imagery, the “Mind Trip.” This book is a practical guide to recover our True Self by examining the roots of our programmed behaviors. Dr. Pecci, has been a practicing psychiatrist since 1964, was president of the Rosebridge Graduate School of Psychology and is Board Certified in Psychology and Neurology. He has written many books and articles on psychology, philosophy, and spirituality which merge Eastern and Western thinking.

Leadership in Dangerous Situations

Patrick Sweeney

Leadership in Dangerous Situations provides in-depth coverage of the key psychological, social and organization factors that impact individual and organizational effectiveness for First Responders in dangerous environments. Leading scholars discuss how current theories and empirical research provides guidelines to help solve the challenges leaders are likely to face in dangerous contexts. This book is directed to First Responders leaders from the Military, Law Enforcement, Fire, Emergency Services and Not-for profit agencies working in dangerous areas. The purpose of this book is to assist the First Responders who risk their lives to serve the public, to prepare for the unique challenges of leading and operating in dangerous situations. Dangerous situations are environments where group members must routinely engage in events that place their physical and psychological well-being at risk to accomplish the organization’s objectives. International scholars and practitioners from the military, law enforcement, fire and rescue, teamed together to address the unique challenges facing dangerous context leaders. Each chapter integrates theory and research with practical experience to address the various challenges these leaders will face while operating in dangerous situations. The intent is to provide practitioners an easily understandable guide, backed by scholarly findings, to prepare themselves and their organizations for the unique psychological, social, and physical challenges of leading and operating in dangerous contexts. The blending of theory and empirical research with practical experience clearly illustrates the principles of effective leadership in dangerous contexts Whether one is a young leader preparing for war, a seasoned commander with multiple combat tours, a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team leader, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) supervisor, first line supervisor of a law enforcement patrol unit, or a lieutenant responsible for a shift of firemen, the challenges of leading people in contexts where life and death decisions are common are very similar. The purpose here is to provide the leader with a better understanding of what is required to lead in dangerous contexts. The contributing authors delve into the psychological, social, and physical factors that can impact the ability to lead, the ability of personnel to perform, and the organization’s ability to accomplish the mission. In the end, the leader will take away not only a understanding of how leading in dangerous contexts is different than leading in contexts where lives are not on the line, but also gain a deeper understanding of why it differs, where commonalities occur, and – perhaps more importantly – how to prepare leaders, whether military or civilian to guide their first responder organizations to perform successfully in dangerous situations.

An Introduction to Social Psychology

William 1871-1938 McDougall

A pioneering work in psychology, this enormously influential book served as a catalyst in the study of the foundations of social behavior. Ironically, its approach marked such a dramatic departure from contemporary trends that it stimulated little follow-up research at the time of its 1908 publication. In recent years, however, the author's ideas have been resurrected in sociobiological reasoning, making the republication of this systematic treatise particularly timely. McDougall's work grounds social behavior in biology, focusing on the individual and attributing most social behavior to instinct. This reasoning makes his work one of the first in modern psychology to take human motivation as its central concern. As one of the initial texts of social psychology, it assisted in laying the foundations of a new discipline, separating the field from its forerunners, sociology and general psychology. McDougall's emphasis on the instinctive basis of social phenomena also helped promote the individualistic approach typical of modern social psychology. Popular, long-lived, and ever-relevant, this landmark work is guaranteed a wide audience among teachers and students of psychology.
