«Учитель фехтования» – один из первых романов Александра Дюма, рассказывающий о более чем полуторагодовалом путешествии французского учителя фехтования в России. От бдительного внимания путешественника не ускользает ни одна малейшая деталь его поездки, будь то разбитая дорога или же особенности гардероба жителей Петербурга. Кстати, о дорогах. Говорят, что всем известная фраза о том, что в России две беды – дураки и дороги принадлежала Николаю Васильевичу Гоголю. Убедиться в справедливости этого высказывания французскому путешественнику удалось практически сразу. «Дороги были настолько плохи, а мой экипаж такой тряский… Я катался по повозке, как орех в скорлупе. Измученный бессонницей, я не раз пробовал взяться за книгу, но уже на четвертой строчке она вылетала у меня из рук…» Удивительным образом с именем Гоголя оказалась связана и еще одна забавная история, произошедшая с нашим французским героем. Помните повесть Гоголя «Нос» о том, как зазнавшаяся часть лица убежала от своего законного владельца? Так вот, существует мнение, что прообразом этого «носа» мог стать наш француз, который едва не отморозил свой великолепный нос во время поездки по зимнему Петербургу и лишь благодаря бдительности неравнодушного прохожего, растершего нос несчастного снегом, все закончилось благополучно и для носа, и для француза. В России долгое время книга «Учитель фехтования» была запрещена к публикации. И все из-за описываемого в ней декабристского восстания. Говорят, что сама царица тайком читала этот роман, чем навлекла на себя гнев венценосного супруга. Хорошо, что сейчас запреты сняты и мы можем в полной мере насладиться этой великолепной книгой, описывающей нам Россию конца девятнадцатого века глазами иностранного путешественника. Надо сказать, что сначала мужик не вызывает интереса: зимой он носит овчинный тулуп, летом – рубашку поверх штанов. На ногах у него род сандалий, которые держатся при помощи длинных ремешков, обвивающих ногу до самых колен. Волосы его коротко острижены, а борода – такая, какая ему дана природой. Женщины носят длинные полушубки, юбки и огромные сапоги, в которых нога совершенно теряет форму. Зато ни в какой другой стране не встретишь среди народа таких спокойных лиц, как здесь. В Париже из десяти человек, принадлежащих к простому люду, лица пяти или шести говорят о страдании, нищете или страхе. В Петербурге я ничего подобного не видел. – Среди жемчужин Петербурга первое место занимает памятник Петру I, воздвигнутый благодаря щедрости Екатерины II. Царь изображен верхом на коне, взвившемся на дыбы, – намек на московское дворянство, укротить которое ему было нелегко. Для завершения аллегории памятника скажу, что стоит он на дикой гранитной скале, которая должна указывать на те затруднения, какие пришлось преодолеть основателю Петербурга. – Весь город, казалось, высыпал на набережную. На Неве, против крепости, стоял огромный баркас, на котором было более шестидесяти музыкантов. Вдруг раздались звуки чудесной музыки. Я приказал своим двум гребцам подъехать как можно ближе к этому прекрасному громадному оркестру. Оказалось, что все музыканты играли на рожках. Впоследствии, когда я ближе познакомился с русским народом, меня перестала удивлять как роговая музыка, так и целые громадные деревянные дома, построенные плотниками с помощью одних только пил и топоров. Но в тот момент я слышал эту музыку впервые и был ею очарован. – Сначала все шло превосходно. Я даже удивлялся, как мало на меня влияет холод, и посмеивался в душе над всеми россказнями о жестоких морозах в России, радуясь, что я так хорошо акклиматизировался. Между тем встречавшиеся мне пешеходы с беспокойством посматривали на меня, но ничего не говорили. Вскоре навстречу мне попался какой то господин, по видимому, более общительный, чем другие. Увидев меня, он крикнул: «Нос!» Я не знал, что это означает по русски, и думал, что не стоит задерживаться из за односложного слова, а потому спокойно продолжал свой путь. На углу Гороховой мне повстречался мчавшийся во весь дух извозчик, но и он крикнул мне: «Нос, нос!» Наконец, на Адмиралтейской площади какой то мужичок, увидев меня, ничего не сказал, но, схватив пригоршню снега, прежде нежели я успел опомниться, стал изо всех сил растирать мне лицо, в особенности нос. Я нашел эту шутку не слишком удачной, тем более по такому холоду, и дал ему такого тумака, что он отлетел шагов на десять. К несчастью или, вернее, к счастью для меня, мимо проходило двое крестьян. Взглянув на меня, они схватили меня за руки, в то время как мой вошедший в раж мужичок по прежнему стал тереть мне лицо снегом, пользуясь тем, что я уже не могу защищаться. Думая, что я стал жертвой недоразумения или попал в ловушку, я изо всех сил стал взывать о помощи. Прибежал какой то офицер и по французски спросил меня, в чем дело. – Ради бога, – воскликнул я, делая попытку освободиться от трех мужичков, – разве вы не видите, что они со мной делают?! – А что? – Они трут мне лицо снегом! Не находите ли вы, что это плохая шутка по такому морозу? – Простите, сударь, но ведь они вам оказывают огромную услугу, – сказал офицер, пристально всматриваясь мне в лицо. – Какую услугу? – Ведь у вас нос отморожен! – Что вы говорите! – вскричал я, хватаясь за нос. В это время какой то прохожий обратился к моему собеседнику: – Ваше благородие, вы отморозили себе нос. – Благодарю вас, – ответил офицер, точно ему сообщили самую обыкновенную и притом приятную новость. Нагнувшись, он взял горсть снега и стал оказывать себе ту самую услугу, которую оказал мне бедный мужик, а я еще так грубо отплатил за его любезность. – Значит, сударь, – сказал я офицеру, – без этого мужичка… – Вы остались бы без носа, – заметил офицер, продолжая растирать свой нос.

It has subsequently been published in three, four, and five-volume editions. Our edition contains four volumes: «The Vicomte de Bragelonne», «Ten Years Later», «Louise de la Vallière», and «The Man in the Iron Mask». This second volume contains chapters 76-140 of the work's 268 chapters, that span the period from 1660 to 1667. Beginning with Princess Henrietta's arrival in 1660, it chronicles the drama of the jealous, lustful and scandal-hungry members of the French court, the love triangle between Louis, Louise, and Raoul, and concludes with d'Artagnon's return to Paris.
