To my mom and dad, for letting me be your third wheel at most restaurants growing up and for giving me the courage to try everything at least once, from unforgettable moo shu pork and sashimi to albóndigas soup and fondue. I’m forever grateful I was born into a family who “lives to eat!” Thanks to your endless love and support, I dare to dream.
Mom, you taught me from an early age how to “host with the most,” and that we could recreate some of our most memorable restaurant meals right at home in our Tahoe kitchen, without a recipe!
Dad, thanks for passing on your “seasoning gene” and always being willing to try whatever interesting concoctions I made from ages 5 to 12, when I was deep in my “exploratory” phase as a young home chef.
To David, my husband and soul match, for waking up one winter Saturday and deciding we should day trip to Michigan. Camp Navama was born out of your relentless quest to find us a (non-temporary) place, away from the noise, where our minds could be quiet, our hearts full, and our souls at peace. This book would not exist without your boundless dedication to our love. Thank you for choosing me in this life. You are my forever adventure.

Introduction
I
I couldn’t wait to escape rural life and move to the big city. For me, that city was L.A., then
Chicago when my husband, David, and I moved there for work.
Tahoe City, a tiny lake town with one stoplight. Like so many small-town kids,
