El autor habla luego de las tradiciones que los estudiosos consideran fuentes tanto del Pentateuco como de los siguientes seis libros históricos bíblicos, aunque no estén exentos de idealizaciones, de acuerdo con el modo apologético antiguo de escribir la historia. Luego vuelve atrás en el tiempo para ocuparse de nuevo de los años cercanos a Jesús de Nazaret, tratando el politeísmo entre los hebreos, el primer monoteísmo (no judío, sino ideado, por razones meramente políticas, por el faraón Akenatón), de la mejor comprensión del amor de Dios por parte de Israel, del nacimiento de la esperanza en un mesías profeta, sacerdote y rey y del resurgir de la idea de la vida eterna. La búsqueda teológica del pueblo hebreo, que según los fieles es una búsqueda de inspiración divina, descubre al avanzar en el tiempo un Dios distinto de los paganos adorados antes por los hebreos junto a un Yahvé que mostraba a su vez la inquietante característica de querer ser temido y servido bajo pena de graves castigos. Finalmente, o paralelamente si consideramos las profecías de Oseas y algunos otros profetas, la búsqueda religiosa llega al conocimiento de un Yahvé esencialmente amoroso, de ese Dios que será revelado plenamente por Jesús como el Amor puro.
