Ник Картер является коллективным псевдонимом множества авторов небольших рассказов в развлекательных периодических изданиях. Одновременно Ник Картер – уникальный персонаж детективного жанра, непревзойденный по количеству произведений, в которых он действует, и по числу его создателей. Впервые он появился в рассказе «Таинственное преступление на площади Мэдисон» 18 сентября 1886 г. в еженедельнике «New York Weekly». Рассказ был написан Джоном Расселом Корнуеллом (1848–1924), а сама идея принадлежала Орманду Смиту, главе издательского концерна Street&Smith. Корнуелл написал еще два рассказа о Картере, после чего работа была продолжена другими авторами. Наиболее известным из них был Фредерик ван Ренселаер Дей (1861–1922), написавший несколько сотен рассказов о Нике Картере.
