Thomas Shadwell (1642-1692) wrote a number of comic plays during his life. His drama featured broadly-based, coarse humor, and is filled with crude-but-vibrant characters drawn from the streets of Restoration London, individuals such as sharpers, whores, and eccentrics. His work is essentially plotless, but reeks with the odor of real people. Frank J. Morlock has created a composite drama (with plot!) from Shadwell's many works, but particularly employing pieces of The Woman Captain, The Squire of Alsatia, The Sullen Lovers, and The Virtuoso. The result is an hilarious masterpiece that's as timeless and as entertaining as the best of modern comedy.
Olympias; and, The Temple of Glory: Two Plays
OLYMPIAS is one of Voltaire's most powerful tragedies. It's based on the suspicion that King Alexander the Great was poisoned, and left an infant daughter, Olympias, by his Persian wife Statira, daughter of the last Persian king. Olympias was raised by Cassander, son of King Antipater of Macedon, who's also tried to murder Statira (although she survived, unbeknownst to him). Now Cassader has succeeded his father as King, but is riddled with guilt over his crimes. Olympias has been raised in ignorance by Cassander, whom she loves. When the real facts of her origin–and her proposed husband's evil deeds–are revealed to her by her mother, she's caught between her genuine affection for the King, and the knowledge of who he really is. Included with this classic play is THE TEMPLE OF GLORY, an opera libretto set in classical times. Two little-known works by one of the greatest French writers.
The Count of Monte Cristo, Part Two: The Resurrection of Edmond Dantes
The Count of Monte Cristo, one of the greatest adventure novels of all time, has been converted by the author into a series of four plays. In PART TWO, Edmond Dantes has escaped from the dreaded prison island of d'If after 14 years of captivity. He seeks out the fabulous treasure of Monte Cristo described to him by the Abbe Faria, and assumes the identity of the priest Busoni. Then he begins his odyssey of revenge, tracking down Caderousse and his wife, La Carconte, and finding the trail of Villefort, another of his betrayers. He also secretly helps his former employer, Mr. Morel. But he has yet to assume the identity of the avenging Count of Monte Cristo! First-rate action drama!
Doin Wildcat
The First National Black Playwrights Conference and Workshop held in Canberra in January 1987 was a hectic affair. More than one participant called on Mudrooroo to use the proceedings (in the sense of what was happening) and the stories going around in a book. Doin Wildcat was that book. Goldoni Plays Volume I
Carlo Goldoni (1707 – 1793) was one of the most prolific and versatile playwrights of his century, even though most of his vast output deals with life confined to a few square miles of Northern Italy. This new edition contains two comedies about women surviving precariously in a man's world, but each taking a distinctly different approach to her problems. Mirandolina believes open dealing is essential; Valentina wants to have her cake and eat it, and uses intrigue to further her interests. Both are eager to win some kind of equality in a world in which they have no equality, only certain advantages, and almost come to grief. But these are worldly comedies and Goldoni does not deny us the satisfaction of seeing the women triumph
