Something Childish and Other Stories is a 1924 collection of short stories by the writer Katherine Mansfield. It was first published in America as The Little Girl. This anthology was published after her death by her husband John Middleton Murry. Murry wrote in his introductory note that this volume contains the stories written between Bliss: and Other Stories (1920) and The Garden Party: and Other Stories (1922). The additional stories are the earlier first four stories, plus «Sixpence» (which Mansfield thought sentimental) and «Poison».
HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics.‘The red and yellow tulips, heavy with flowers, seemed to lean upon the dusk. A grey cat, dragging its belly, crept across the lawn, and a black one, its shadow, trailed after.’Powerful and evocative, each of Katherine Mansfield’s short stories is a masterclass in the form that made her name. Cut tragically short at the age of 34, hers was a life of passion that took her from New Zealand to Bohemian London and Paris. These various landscapes are reflected with verve in her writing, and are peopled with astutely and intimately drawn characters: lonely Miss Brill in her ermine, Colonel Pinner’s adrift daughters, mysterious Pearl Fulton.Praised by Virginia Woolf and D. H. Lawrence, Mansfield’s inimitable stories are essential reading.

Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) is credited alongside James Joyce as the creator of the modern short story. The New Zealand-born Englishwoman embraced a Bohemian lifestyle and became involved in a series of scandalous relationships, which greatly influenced some of her most significant work. Her best-known writings were produced in her final years, as she was plagued by illness. Her fiction is dominated by themes of male-female relationships, sexual ambivalence and gender roles. Most of her work focuses on female protagonists and demonstrates the problems of social relationships. This collection, written between 1920-1922, includes “At the Bay,” a story that proposes there is more to a woman's life than marriage and motherhood; “The Garden Party,” which explores class differences; “The Daughters of the Late Colonel,” a story about life and death; “Marriage à la Mode,” about the dissolution of a relationship; “Miss Brill,” Mansfield's memorable tale of the lonely woman, and several more.

An artist who excelled at the expression of subtle details and concentrated emotion, Katherine Mansfield ranks among the twentieth century's greatest short story writers. Her elegant, ironic tales reflect her own bohemian lifestyle, which involved tempestuous relationships with Bertrand Russell and Virginia Woolf. This collection of a dozen of Mansfield's finest works features compelling tales of fraught relationships and shattering revelations, all recounted in an intensely visual and impressionistic style. These stories range from throughout Mansfield's brief but prolific career. They include «Prelude,» a reminiscence of the author's New Zealand girlhood; «Bliss,» involving a young mother's disillusionment; «Je Ne Parle Pas Français,» concerning a romantic young woman's betrayal; and «The Garden Party,» a contrast of snobbery and social responsibility.
