Orhan Pamuk: Critical Essays on a Novelist between Worlds

This collection of new essays brings together scholarly examinations of a writer who—despite the prestige that the Nobel Prize has earned him—remains controversial with respect to his place in the literary tradition of his home country. This is in part because the positioning of Turkey itself in relation to the cultural divide between East and West has been the subject of a debate going back to the beginnings of the modern Turkish state and earlier.
The present essays, written mostly by literary scholars, range widely across Pamuk’s novelistic oeuvre, dealing with how the writer, often adding an allegorical level to the personages depicted in his experimental narratives, portrays tensions such as those between Western secularism and traditional Islam and different conceptions of national identity.

Challenges, risks and threats for security in Europe

The conditions for security in Europe in the 21st century differ from those in the second half of the 20th century. The consequences of the East-West conflict no longer determine the security agenda. Due to the pan-European process of integration and cooperation, European countries have the chance of a future together in an “area of peace, freedom, security and justice”. However, the security situation in Europe is determined by new threats and risks. Comprehensive security means that external and internal as well as civilian and military security aspects are closely linked. It goes beyond traditional security issues and includes, inter alia, instruments of economic, social, and health policy. In addition, today's threats are of cross-boarder nature: Threats like attacks on the security of IT systems, organized crime, and climate change appear to be solvable mainly through international cooperation. Thus, the role of international organizations is becoming more important. The 11th Network Conference analysed the existing security architecture of Europe in the above mentioned political areas. The contributions can be found in this publication.

Featuring a special section on “Identity Clashes: Russian and Ukrainian Debates on Culture, History, and Politics”

This issue's special section explores the discursive gaps, tensions, and ruptures between Ukrainian and Russian narratives of national identity. It gives the floor to Russian and Ukrainian authors with a view to enabling analytical comparisons between the dominant narratives in the two countries, including their cultural, historical, and political dimensions. This juxtaposition of Russian and Ukrainian insights is aimed at deepening our understanding of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

    World Literature in Motion

By bringing in different degrees of circulation in different regions and languages, this collection shows that while literary centers do exist in what Pascale Casanova calls “the international literary space”, their power does not operate unilaterally and modes of intercultural circulation do exist beyond their control. The title “World Literature in Motion” highlights the fact that world literature is always already the product of certain modes of conceptual and material mobility and mediation.
