Es ist eines der bekanntesten US-amerikanischen Gedichte.Im Original ist der Schlußreim «more», nämlich «evermore». Обида не отомщена, если мстителя настигает расплата. Она не отомщена и в том случае, если обидчик не узнает, чья рука обрушила на него кару. Ни словом, ни поступком я не дал Фортунато повода усомниться в моем наилучшем к нему расположении. По-прежнему я улыбался ему в лицо; и он не знал, что теперь я улыбаюсь при мысли о его неминуемой гибели. У него была одна слабость, у этого Фортунато, хотя в других отношениях он был человеком, которого должно было уважать и даже бояться. Он считал себя знатоком вин и немало этим гордился...»
