Der ehemalige Sträfling Valjean vollzieht eine Wandlung zum Guten und nimmt sich des Waisenkinds Cosette an. Er wird aber immer wieder von seiner Vergangenheit eingeholt. Cosette verliebt sich in den jungen Anwalt Marius, der ebenso wie Valjean in den Pariser Barrikadenschlachten von 1832 für mehr soziale Gerechtigkeit kämpft. Durch Güte und Menschlichkeit überwindet Valjean alle äußeren und inneren Widerstände und stirbt am Ende versöhnt mit sich und der Welt.
