Die kleine Fadette
Die kleine Fadette, ein Roman, der im bäuerlichen Milieu spielt und in dem George Sand aus ihren eigenen Kindheitserfahrung des Landlebens der Bauernwelt der Berry-Region schöpft und der zu den sogenannten 'ländlichen Romanen' im Werk Sands zählt. Die Hauptfigur, die kleine Fadette, ist die Enkelin einer Dorfhexe und hat aufgrund der ihr zugeschriebenen Hexenkräfte einen schlechten Ruf.
Indiana
Indiana, eine junge Adlige, die von französischen Kolonialsiedlern vom heutigen La Réunion abstammt und derzeit in Frankreich lebt, ist mit einem älteren Ex-Offizier namens Colonel Delmare verheiratet und leidet an einer Vielzahl unbekannter Krankheiten, vermutlich aufgrund des Mangels an Leidenschaft in ihrem Leben. The Bagpipers
The novel takes place between Berry and Bourbonnais and it tells the story of the life of the «bagpipes», at the end of the 18th century. The novel is divided into thirty-two evenings, where the narrator Étienne Depardieu, recounts his life with his cousin Brulette, and their friend Joseph living in Berry. Joseph will meet masters of the bagpipes of Bourbonnais who will transmit to him the knowledge of «music».
The Marquis de Villemer
Set in France during the perennial turmoil the novel follows the main character Caroline, very endearing and honest orphan girl through the many twists and turns of the story. As it happens, beautiful Caroline catches the eye of two French aristocrats. Full of pride and honesty, Caroline is willing to sacrifice her honor for the pure and sincere love of the man she loves. The novel provides an intense and realistic picture of eighteenth century France caught in disorder and full of scenarios on the edge of the sublime.
The Devil's Pool
Germain has been a widower for two years and his father-in-law Père Maurice wants him to go visit his friend Leonard, to visit Leonard's daughter, a rich widow who is looking to remarry. Germain does not really want to remarry, but his three children need a mother so he agrees to go for a visit. He leaves with his son, Pierre, and Mary, beautiful 16 year old girl who needs to find a job in town. They stop near the Devil's Pool and spend the night. Germain and Mary begin to fall in love with each other, but neither shows it. The next morning Germain goes to see the widow but leaves disappointed, while Mary escapes from her rough employer. They go back to the village and break communication, while the night they spent together near the Devil's Pool doesn't let go.
The Sin of Monsieur Antoine
The plot takes place in France in the 19th century as Émile, a progressive young man concerned with social justice, falls in love with Gilberte, the daughter of his neighbor, Monsieur Antoine, Count of Chateaubrun. Monsieur Antoine is a ruined nobleman who had to become a worker in order to survive. Because of that the young couple's relationship is not approved by Émile's father, an authoritarian industrialist who ran a factory in Gargilesse. Émile and Gilberte received the support of a worker, Jean, as well as an eccentric nobleman, the Marquis de Boisguilsbault, who bequeathed his fortune to the couple in order to found an agrarian community. Émile and Gilberte want to put into practice their ideas of social progress in the region fighting for their love in the process.
Valentine
Set during the Restoration-period French republic, the novel follows the life story of Valentine, a young lady who is born into an aristocratic family but falls in love with the peasant farmer, Benedict. While marriage between Valentine and Benedict would be based on genuine love, it is also forbidden by their class differences. Her family finds a better suited fiancé for her in form of Évariste de Lansac, who is greedy and pursues marriage for land and wealth. Destroyed by Valentine's betrayal Benedict becomes entangled romantically with Valentine's sister Louise
Indiana
Indiana is the story's heroine, a young noblewoman descended from French colonial settlers from Île Bourbon who lives in France. Indiana is married to an older ex-army officer named Colonel Delmare and suffers from the lack of passion in her life. Indiana does not love Delmare and searches for someone who will love her passionately. Her cousin Ralph is in love with her, but she overlooks him and falls in love with their well-spoken neighbor, Raymon de Ramiere. Indiana escapes the house to faithfully present herself in Raymon's apartments in the middle of the night, but they don't get along and Colonel Delmare takes Indiana to Île Bourbon. Indiana returns to France on a perilous sea journey during the French Revolution of 1830, where she reconnects with Raymon, but also with Ralph, which further complicate matters. The novel is an exploration of nineteenth-century female desire complicated by class constraints and by social codes about infidelity.
