The articles or «ravings» in this book give the reader a glimpse inside just what I think about dog training. They are small snippets and articles on the way to understand how to speak Dog As A Second Language vs. the tired and old ideas of the dog listening and doing what I want because I am the human . . . I hope to inspire you with these articles and whet your appetite to learn even more about a science based, positive reinforcement way of Keeping it Simple Stupid, and if nothing else to at least having fun while training your dog . . .

Okay, please don’t misunderstand me. I am not trying to insult you with the title of this book. Rather, I want to get your attention. The goal of teaching you how to get you pooch to come back to you when you call them is secondary. My primary goal is to get you to think about dog training in a different way!
In many ways, I train dogs the way most of us want to teach children. That being said, I for some reason have way more patience with my dogs than my own kids – just ask my sons and they will confirm. I think it has something to do with the fact my sons talk back and my dogs don’t but that is just one man’s opinion . . .
With this book, I hope to give you a new way to look at your dog, as well as a very successful set of techniques that will have your dog coming when called on a regular and consistent basis.

Is Fido peeing and pooping in all the wrong spots? Are you pulling your hair out? Well, Keep it Simple Stupid Dog Training's Dog Owner's Book of Poop and Pee will teach you how to get Fido to «GO» in the right place, at the right time and even improve the way the two of you communicate.
I don't promise fast results – there is no magic bullet or Jedi mind tricks to fix the potty training issue! Instead, I teach you how to speak Dog as a Second Language (DASL) to tell Fido what behaviors you want and when you want them!
Mike Deathe, CPDT-KA, is a dog trainer who for years has seen the communication problems dogs and their owners encounter! In the end, the animal with all the «grey matter» and the opposable thumbs is still trying to force Fido to speak English! Welcome to Keep it Simple Stupid Dog Training, where finally you (the smart one) will finally understand that dogs don't speak English and it is your job to learn DASL (Dog as a Second Language)! Once fluent, I promise you and Fido will be communicating better than ever!
Over the past several years, I found there were five articles from my blog that became more and more popular. These five got more views, comments and results than any of my other articles. In fact, my first session with clients often focused on these five topics as a way to jump-start training and leadership not to mention helping with owner frustration. I even started carrying copies of these articles in my car to give clients after our sessions. Then, one day, a client made two observations that have stuck with me, and been repeated by a few others as well:
You know, everything you just taught me is really nothing more than common sense and I really should have been able to figure this out on my own . . . AND
Why on earth have you not put these ideas into a book?
Well, that was about three years ago, during that time, we finished up our book on potty training – The Dog Owner’s Book of Poop and Pee – and also released a book for shelter volunteers called Forever Home . . . Dog Training 101 & How to be a Better Shelter Volunteer . Instead of taking a break and enjoying the fact that both were done, I instead sit here with the final draft of Five Steps to the Perfect Pet in my hand …I hope it helps you as much as it did the clients that inspired me to write it!

Writing this book has been a challenge and a pleasure all at the same time. As I read and edit it (for what seems the 150th time), I realize it is way more than a book on how to be a great shelter volunteer. It is really a book about dogs, dog training and the ability to relate to your dog without malice, over the top control or even dominance. I am very proud of the ideas here, and really hope that all the people that read this book rush out to their local shelter, sign up as a volunteer and make a difference. I also realize this book has the potential to help people inside their own home with their own dogs, leading to a happier home for everyone involved. Even at the time of writing this last chapter, I have no idea what the title of the book will be. It was originally to be titled “So You Want to Be a Shelter Volunteer”, but in looking at the final product I think it covers way more than that.
I can only hope that you, the reader, agree. I ask you to take this information, share it, find someone to help or maybe even decide to go out and join the group of us that are lucky enough to work with dogs and their owners for a living. (Dog Trainer is really not accurate, since we are first and foremost people trainers!) Every author thinks, or at least hopes, that everything they write will be thought of as a “masterpiece”! I hold no such hopes. I know there are as many different ways to train a dog as there are types of dogs in the world. Rather, I hope you found a nugget or two in this book that you cannot wait to try. Thank you for supporting Keep it Simple Stupid (KISS) Dog Training and go out and make a difference with your own dog or others’ dogs. In the end, it is all about saving more dogs and finding them their forever homes. I hope you find few ideas to try along the way.
