A good defense is a prerequisite for modern team handball. The intention is not only to prevent goals but also to actively win the ball and subsequently initiate a fast attack. The offense should permanently be put under pressure and forced to make mistakes.
The exercises in this collection initially deal with the individual basics of defense play. Individual and position-specific training marks the starting point for subsequent cooperative defense play and allows for choosing the appropriate defense system. The basics both include exercises on legwork, 1-on-1 defense and covering the pivot in combination with fast adjustment to subsequent actions as well as blocking and anticipating on the wing positions of a proactive defense system.
The second part of the collection deals with cooperative small group defense play and focuses on handing over/taking over attacking players along the defense line (width of defense) and on making agreements when defending against the pivot.
The third chapter introduces cooperative team defense in 6-0, 5-1, 3-2-1, and 4-2 defense systems along with possible variants.
Get inspired by the exercises, develop your own defense concepts, and make use of the individual strengths of your defense players for optimal cooperation.
By making your training units more diverse, you can increase the players’ motivation, since you consistently offer new approaches to improve and refine familiar movement sequences. In this book, you will find inspiring exercises you can apply during each phase of your everyday team handball training – from warm-up and goalkeeper warm-up shooting to the common contents of the main phase and the closing games. Each exercise is illustrated and described in an easy, comprehensible manner. Specific notes give you tips on what you need to be aware of.
This book deals with the following key subjects:
Warm-up: – Basic warm-up – Short warm-up games – Sprint contests – Coordination – Ball familiarization – Goalkeeper warm-up shooting
Basic exercises, basic play, and target play: – Offense/series of shots – General offense – Fast throw-off – 1st and 2nd wave – Defensive action – Closing games – Endurance

Passing and catching are two basic techniques in handball, which have to be continuously practiced and improved in training. The 25 practical exercises given here offer many variations to train passing and catching, both challenging and varied. A special focus is to be put on improving the accuracy in passing and catching in motion with high dynamics. Therefore, the exercises are combined with new pathways and near-to-play movements.
The exercises are easy to understand and clearly explained using simple language and diagrams, and can be integrated directly into each training session. Passing and catching can be adapted to different levels of difficulty and complexity for all age groups.
This intense training unit focuses on athletics training. After warm-up including a game with high running intensity and a coordination run exercise, an athletics course is done. An additional jumping and strength exercise for the arms and a running exercise complete this training unit.
The training unit consists of the following key exercises: – Warm-up/Stretching (individual exercise: 10 minutes/total time: 10 minutes) – Short game (15/25) – Coordination run (10/35) – Athletics course (30/65) – Athletics training (15/80) – Running exercise (10/90) Total training time: 90 minutes
Difficulty level: Top level (competitive area)
This unit trains handball-specific endurance focusing on running and jumping exercises. After warm-up including a coordination run exercise, ball familiarization includes a passing and running course across the whole court. Goalkeeper warm-up shooting includes a series of 4 shots combined with a subsequent 2-on-2 fast break. The following endurance unit requires jumping exercises and playing 2-on-2 across the whole court alternately. This intense unit ends with a team exercise and a team fast break contest.
The training unit consists of the following key exercises: – Warm-up/Stretching (individual exercise: 10 minutes/total time: 10 minutes) – Coordination run (10/20) – Ball familiarization (10/30) – Goalkeeper warm-up shooting (10/40) – Endurance course (25/65) – Team exercise (10/75) – Offense/Individual (15/90) Total training time: 90 minutes
Difficulty level: Top level (competitive area)
This training unit focuses on simple initial actions in order to gain positional advantage by having a physically stronger pivot play against a physically weaker defense player on the wing positions. The warm-up phase focuses on coordination. Afterwards, the players practice the first steps of the subsequent team play during the ball familiarization and goalkeeper warm-up shooting phases. The three subsequent offense exercises consist of the preparation and the final 1-on-1 play to get the pivot into a good shooting position. A closing game completes this training unit.
The training unit consists of the following key exercises: – Warm-up/Stretching (individual exercise: 10 minutes/total time: 10 minutes) – Coordination run (10/20) – Ball familiarization (10/30) – Goalkeeper warm-up shooting (10/40) – Offense/Individual (10/50) – Offense/Small groups (15/65) – Offense/Team (15/80) – Closing game (10/90) Training unit total time: 90 minutes

Shooting is a central component of team handball and must be practiced and improved regularly. Therefore, it is reasonable to integrate shooting series into training units from time to time. This collection of exercises contains 60 comprehensible practical drills focusing on this subject. They can be integrated in every training unit.
The exercises are divided into the following six categories and three difficulty levels (easy, medium, difficult): – Technique – Shooting at fixed targets – Series of shots at the goal – Shooting training for specific playing positions – Complex series of shots – Shooting competitions
With these options, you can easily make your shooting trainings more diverse and create new approaches for every age group. Additional notes and possible variations should inspire you to further modify the exercises and to adjust them to your players’ level of performance.

The objective of this training unit is to practice the interaction of a back position player with the pivot. Following warm-up and a running coordination exercise, the players prepare for the running moves in the back positions during the ball familiarization phase. After the goalkeeper warm-up shooting, there will be three offense exercises in which the players further develop the team play step by step. In a 4-on-4 game, the players should implement what they practiced before.
The training unit consists of the following key exercises: – Warm-up/Stretching (individual exercise: 10 minutes/total time: 10 minutes) – Coordination run (10/20) – Ball familiarization (10/30) – Goalkeeper warm-up shooting (10/40) – Offense/Small groups (10/50) – Offense/Small groups (10/60) – Offense/Small groups (20/80) – Offense/Team (10/90) Training unit total time: 90 minutes
