    Walking in Provence - West

    Janette Norton

Guidebook to a range of 30 varied, graded day walks in the sunny south-east of France in the Drôme Provençale, the Vaucluse and the Var regions of Provence. Provence's lower western regions offer wonderful walking – the vineyards, lavender fields and rolling hills of the Drôme Provençale, the historic old towns and castles set in the river valleys and gorges of Vaucluse and low sheltered valleys and craggy ridges on the Sainte-Baume massif in the Var. There are charming bases from which to explore the regions, including Nyons, Apt and Aix-en-Provence. None of the routes require special equipment although some may be a little exposed. All should be suitable for walkers of average fitness. Routes are described step by step, with clear maps and profiles to help you assess them, along with the standard route summary table at the back of the guide.

None of the routes require special equipment although some of the more challenging routes may be exposed and precipitous. All should be suitable for walkers of average fitness. Walking in the Dordogne

    Janette Norton

Guidebook to 35 half-day and day walks in France's beautiful Dordogne region, based around Bergerac, Lalinde, Sarlat and Souillac (Lot). The walks, which range from 6 to 18.5km, take in the region's myriad delights, from spectacular gorges to enchanting chateaux and charming medieval villages. All walks are within the capacity of the average walker, and are on well-marked paths or quiet roads. They are graded easy or medium; there are no long, steep climbs or abrupt descents.
There are step-by-step descriptions and maps for each route. Also included is information on the history, flora and fauna of the region, together with practical pointers such as what to take and when to go, as well as notes on waymarking, accommodation and transport. A route summary table and glossary are also provided.
Lying in south west France, the Dordogne is a land of great scenic variety, from rolling wooded hills and fertile valleys to barren upland plateaus and limestone cliffs riddled with caves. The charm of the Dordogne also lies in the picturesque medieval towns, châteaux, churches and abbeys that stud the landscape, and these are the focus of many of the walks.

Walking in the Haute Savoie: North

    Janette Norton

A guidebook of half and full-day walks in the lovely Haute Savoie mountains of France. This guide describes 30 circular routes of between 7 and 13km, based around Evian-les-Bains, Morzine, Abondance, Chatel, St-Julien-en-Genevois, Bellevaux, Boege and Habere-Poche.
Graded from easy to difficult, there are walks to suit most abilities, but a few have some exposed sections and need a head for heights. The guide is divided into 6 areas covering the Saleve and Vuache, the Vallee Verte, the Vallee du Brevon, Pre-Alpes du Leman and Val d'Abondance. With highlights including Cornettes de Bise, Mont de Grange, Dent d'Oche and Pic Bore, the walks in this guide will show you a quieter, less busy side to this outstandingly beautiful area.
Alongside a detailed route description and map, each walk has a summary of all you need to know before you set out (distance, time to walk, ascent, maximum altitude and instructions for accessing the start). The guidebook includes advice on travel, accommodation and equipment, as well as information about local wildlife and Savoyard food and drink, and a glossary of useful French words. A companion volume, Walking in Haute Savoie: South, is also available (ISBN: 9781852848118)

    Walking in the Cevennes

    Janette Norton

An introductory guidebook to the best walking in the Cevennes region of southern France, describing 16 day-walks in the southern Cevennes (based around Le Vignan), 15 day-walks in the northern Cevennes (based around Florac) and a 5-day trek around Mont Lozère. Although just across the River Rhone from Provence, the Cevennes is one of France's wild and unknown regions. Resembling the Scottish Highlands in places (similar in height at a maximum of 1567m, but warmer and with fewer midges), the region includes the 230,000 sq km Parc National des Cevennes and the upper reaches of the Tarn gorge. First introduced to a wider world by Caesar's crossing and then by the young Robert Louis Stevenson and his ?Walks with a Donkey' (1879), the Cevennes still has much that can be freshly explored. Compared with Provence the landscapes are harsher, more mountainous, less populated. The weather is more extreme: winters are cold, windblown and snowy, summers are dry and hot. The Cevennes attracts the walker and explorer who has a taste for a more rugged and subtler landscape. This is Janette Norton's third Cicerone guide to France, following on from her Haute Savoie and Provence guides. Based in the north around Florac and in the south around Le Vigan, the guide explores the walking potential of the region in 31 half- to full-day walks and the well-known five-day circuit of Mont Lozère.
