Marie Antoinette was the wife of Louis XVI of France, the reigning King at the time of the French Revolution. Louis XVI's failure in running the country along with Marie Antoinette's unpopularity were central elements that led to the political climate at the end of the 19th century in France and ultimately would seal their own tragic demise and the end of the monarchy. Hilaire Belloc, a Frenchman himself who was raised in England, constructs an excellent biography of Marie Antoinette in this volume. Belloc's work spans from her birth to her trial and conviction for blocking the efforts at establishing a French democracy, the result of which ends with her tragic death on the guillotine. Belloc's work is an interesting and historical look at an important time for the country of France as seen through the life of its last Queen.
One of Hilaire Belloc’s most famous works, “Cautionary Tales for Children” satirizes a genre of admonitory children’s literature popular in England in the 19th century. The seven stories contained in this work are macabre parodies of childhood lessons, and will entertain more sophisticated readers who can appreciate these tales of disproportionate punishment. Presented in a classic picture book style, Belloc has captured the foibles of children like Jim, who let go of his nurse’s hand and was eaten by a lion; Matilda, who told lies, and was burned to death; and Henry King who swallowed string. The consequences range from naughty children being whimsically eaten by lions, to stern reprimands for a boy who fires a loaded gun at his sister. Originally written nearly a century ago, Belloc’s sprightly verses are a quick and cathartic read which reflects upon a trend in children’s literature from yesteryear.
Hilaire Belloc's best work — according to the author, as well as most critics — The Path to Rome is less concerned with Rome itself than with a pilgrim's journey to the Eternal City. A spirited Catholic apologist, Belloc traveled on foot from Toul (near Nancy), France, and crossed the Alps and the Apennines in order to, in his words, «see all Europe which the Christian Faith has saved.» Afterward, he turned his pen from his usual polemics to literature, and related in finely crafted prose his myriad experiences with the people he met along the way, as well as his reflections on tradition, politics, landscape, and much else. Throughout, the work abounds in Belloc's inimitable wit and good humor, and displays his profound love for the land, his faith, and his fellow man.
