Die Odyssee neben der Ilias das zweite traditionell dem griechischen Dichter Homer zugeschriebene Epos, gehört zu den ältesten und einflussreichsten Dichtungen der abendländischen Literatur. In Schriftform wurde das Werk erstmals wahrscheinlich um die Wende vom 8. zum 7. Jahrhundert v. Chr. festgehalten. Es schildert die Abenteuer des Königs Odysseus von Ithaka und seiner Gefährten auf der Heimkehr aus dem Trojanischen Krieg. In vielen Sprachen ist der Begriff «Odyssee» zum Synonym für eine lange Irrfahrt geworden.
Ilias und Odyssee
»Ilias« und »Odyssee« haben zahlreiche Künstler zu bildlichen Nachschöpfungen inspiriert. Nur wenige haben sich jedoch an umfangreichere Zyklen gewagt. Zu diesen zählt der englische Bildhauer und Zeichner John Flaxman (1755-1826), der 1793 eine der außergewöhnlichsten Bildfolgen zu Homers Epen schuf. Seine Umrisszeichnungen erinnern in ihrem klassizistischen Stil an antike Vasenmalereien. Durch den bewussten Verzicht auf Farbe und die Betonung der Linie gelangen Flaxman ausdrucksstarke Illustrationen, die bis heute seinen Ruhm begründen. Mit dieser bibliophilen Neuausgabe im originalen Querformat liegt nach mehr als 100 Jahren erstmals wieder der vollständige Zyklus mit den dazugehörigen Gesängen vor. Die Texte werden in der klassischen Übersetzung von Flaxmans deutschem Zeitgenossen Johann Heinrich Voß wiedergeben. Abgerundet wird der Band von einer fundierten Einleitung zu Künstler und Werk sowie einzelnen Illustrationen.

The Iliad & The Odyssey
While Homer's existence as a historical person is still a topic of debate, the writings attributed to the name have made their mark not only on Greek history and literature, but upon western civilization itself. Homer's epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey, laid the foundation upon which Ancient Greece developed not only its culture, but its societal values, religious beliefs, and practice of warfare as well.
This publication features the Samuel Butler translation, and while it strays from the poetic style reproduced by more well known translators like Robert Fagles and Robert Fitzgerald, the vision of the epics as if they were prose found in modern novels take their best form under Butler's most capable hand.
