The 1892 collection «Celtic Fairy Tales» is a beautiful anthology which highlights Celtic children's literature. Folklorist Joseph Jacobs spent his entire career gathering a host of fairy tales known in the English language and compiling them into a number of anthologies. «Celtic Fairy Tales» includes popular stories such as «Conall Yellowclaw,» «The Sea-Maiden,» and «Battle of the Birds,» all of which were gathered straight from oral tradition by Jacobs to be preserved forever in text. Like the famous German fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, not every story in «Celtic Fairy Tales» ends happily for all the characters. For example, in «Fair, Brown, and Trembling,» the oldest sister tried to kill the youngest, so she was banished to the ocean in a barrel with only a small amount of provisions for food. Modern readers will also recognize parallels between well-known fairy tales and the stories in Jacobs' anthology. «Jack and his Comrades» is similar to «Town Musicians of Bremen,» a story about a group of farm animals who fight four robbers away from their home. «Celtic Fairy Tales» is not only a solid collection of stories for young children, but adults will understand the significance of Joseph Jacob's work to preserve the legacy of Celtic folklore forever.
During his lifetime Australian Folklorist Joseph Jacobs would become one of the most important English authorities on folklore. Beginning in 1888, Jacobs began publishing his anthologies of popular world myths and legends. Drawing upon numerous literary sources Jacobs would popularize what have become some of the world’s best known folktales. In this 1891 collection of “Celtic Fairy Tales” Jacobs turned his attention for the first time to the myths and legends of the Celtic people. Like the famous German fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, the legends collected in “Celtic Fairy Tales” often tend towards the macabre. For example, in “Fair, Brown, and Trembling,” the oldest sister tried to kill the youngest, so she was banished to the ocean in a barrel with only a small amount of provisions for food. Modern readers will also recognize parallels between well-known fairy tales and the stories in Jacobs’ anthology. “Jack and his Comrades” is similar to “Town Musicians of Bremen,” a story about a group of farm animals who fight four robbers away from their home. All together twenty-six tales are included in this volume along with the original illustrations by John D. Batten.
Soils and national characteristics differ, but fairy tales are the same in plot and incidents the world over. So proved the leading British folklorist Joseph Jacobs (1854–1916) with this now classic volume of 29 traditional tales from India, including some of the oldest recorded tales known."The Lion and the Crane," «How the Raja's Son Won the Princess Labam,» «The Broken Pot,» «The Tiger, the Brahman, and the Jackal,» «The Talkative Tortoise,» «The Ass in the Lion's Skin,» «Why the Fish Laughed,» «Sun, Moon, and Wind Go Out to Dinner,» «The Prince and the Fakir,» and all the other stories make delightful reading or listening for youngsters who are tired of the same familiar old favorites. John D. Batten's nine full-page plates and his 37 other drawings are reproduced from the original edition.
