      A convenient arrangement...or something more?

      A Women of Lancaster County story

      When Ellie Stoltzfus arrives to provide housecleaning and childcare services for her friend’s brother, Reuben Miller, the Amish widower’s reluctant to agree. But, smitten with Reuben’s young son, Ellie’s determined to see the job through. There’s no denying Ellie is good for both father and son, but still-grieving Reuben won’t marry for love again. Can he convince Ellie to be his wife...in name only?

      REBECCA KERTZ was first introduced to the Amish when her husband took a job with an Amish construction crew. She enjoyed watching the Amish foreman’s children at play and swapping recipes with his wife. Rebecca resides in Delaware with her husband and dog. She has a strong faith in God and feels blessed to have family nearby. Besides writing, she enjoys reading, doing crafts and visiting Lancaster County.

      “I need a wife,” Reuben murmured. “My son needs a mother.”

      Ellie tensed. She picked Ethan up and gave him to his father. “You want to fall in love and marry again?”

      “Nay, I’ll marry, but I won’t fall in love.”

      “You’d wed without love?”

      “I’d wed for Ethan.” He combed his fingers through Ethan’s baby-fine hair. “But love? Nay. I don’t want or need it.”

      What woman would agree to such an arrangement? “I see.” She reached for her satchel on the other end of the counter. “I should get home.”

      She felt Reuben watching her as she picked up her bag. She was conscious of him as he followed her out of the house.

      With a last look in his direction as she pulled away, Ellie wondered how a man who obviously loved his son could dismiss love in marriage so easily. What woman would be happy to be married to such a man and not fall in love with him? And with his son?

      Be strong and of a good courage, fear not,

      nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God,

      he it is that doth go with thee;

      he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

      —Deuteronomy 31:6

      Dear Reader,

      Welcome back to Happiness, Pennsylvania, where the Amish struggle to solve problems, marry, have children, work hard and worship God. His Suitable Amish Wife is Ellie Stoltzfus’s story. You may have read about her four sisters, Nell, Meg, Leah and Charlie. Ellie sees her sisters happy with their husbands, and she longs for a loving husband and children of her own. But she falls for the wrong man. A widower with a little son. A man who has decided, after the death of his wife, that he won’t marry for love. But he will take a wife to be the mother of his child.

      Ellie shouldn’t like the man, but she can see the good in him. Reuben Miller was once her sister’s beau, although the couple split up after her sister realized she was in love with another man. Unwittingly, she finds herself babysitting for the man’s son, and thus Ellie can’t avoid Reuben. There is so much to worry about. So much to overcome. But Ellie has a strength about her that guides her with the Lord’s help. Now if only the man would cooperate.
