    Writers & Lovers

    Lily King

Writers & Lovers is the highly anticipated new novel following King’s 2014 bestseller Euphoria , which was a New York Times ’ Top Ten Book of the Year and sold over 400,000 copies in North America It was a top ten book of the year in Time, Entertainment Weekly, Newsday, Vogue, San Francisco Chronicle, Salon , and New York , won the Kirkus Prize and New England Book Award, and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award In writing this book, King sought to write the book she had always wanted to read but could never find—a novel about a woman’s struggle to become an artist. Though books like A Moveable Feast and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man depict a young man’s artistic journey, she had never found such a story from a woman’s perspective. In her words: “Where are the books about a woman clawing her life open like these men, struggling artistically but also financially, emotionally, sexually, and existentially?” As one of the biggest acquisitions in Grove’s history, Writers & Lovers will be the focus of a huge marketing and publicity campaign including a 20-city author tour, large marketing spend, numerous regional shows including Winter Institute, and major review attention With its brilliantly observed and psychologically acute exploration of modern relationships and its keen eye for dialogue, Writers & Lovers will appeal to fans of Sally Rooney’s Normal People and Lauren Groff’s Fates and Furies , while its depiction of the fraught, messy, and often joyful process of becoming oneself, artistically and emotionally, will attract readers of Sheila Heti’s How Should a Person Be? Like Stephanie Danler’s bestselling Sweetbitter , Writers & Lovers deftly depicts the exhilarating and chaotic world of the restaurant industry, from its romantic intrigues, petty dramas, and touching moments of connection between server and patron We have already closed three major subrights deals with Picador in the UK, HarperCollins in Canada, and Blackstone in Grove’s largest audio deal to date Father of the Rain was a Washington Post Best Book of the Year, New York Times Editors’ Choice, O Magazine and Marie Claire summer reading title, Publishers Weekly Best Novel of the Year, and winner of the New England Book Award for Fiction The Pleasing Hour (1999) was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and The English Teacher (2005) was a Chicago Tribune and Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year and People Critics Choice

    PACIFIC WAR STORIES

    Отсутствует

The most extensive collection published to date of first-person oral histories on so many diverse aspects of the war in the Pacific—told in gripping, eyewitness accounts by more than seventy veterans from all branches of service. In this new book by the authors of Pacific Legacy: Image and Memory of World War II in the Pacific, the history of the War in the Pacific comes vividly to life in the words of those who witnessed it first hand. The editors create for the reader, as the veterans themselves recall it, what that war was like—how it looked, felt, smelled, and sounded. The stories collected here are a unique portrayal of the mundane, exotic, boring, terrifying, life-altering events that made up their wartime experiences in World War II in the Pacific, a war fought on countless far-flung islands over an area that constitutes about one-third of the globe. What the veterans saw and lived through has stayed with them their entire lives, and much of it comes to the surface again through their vivid memories. The narratives, grouped into fifteen thematic, chronologically arranged chapters, are stirring, first-hand accounts, from front-line combat at the epicenter of violence and death to restless, weary boredom on rear area islands thousands of miles from the fighting. While their experiences differed, all were changed by what happened to them in the Pacific. These are not the stories of sweeping strategies or bold moves by generals and admirals. Instead, we hear from men and women on the lower rungs, including ordinary seamen on vessels that encountered Japanese warships and planes and sometimes came out second best, rank-and-file Marines who were in amtracs churning toward bullet-swept tropical beaches and saw their buddies killed beside them, and astounded eyewitnesses to the war’s sudden start on December 7, 1941. This is an important book for military buffs as well as for the survivors of World War II and their families.
