Bioprocessing Piping and Equipment Design. A Companion Guide for the ASME BPE Standard

William M. (Bill) Huitt

The only comprehensive and authoritative reference guide to the ASME Bioprocessing Piping and Equipment (BPE) standard This is a companion guide to the ASME Bioprocessing Piping and Equipment (BPE) Standard and explains what lies behind many of the requirements and recommendations within that industry standard. Following an introductory narrative to the Standard's early history, industry related codes and standards are explained; the design and engineering aspects cover construction materials, both metallic and nonmetallic; then components, fabrication, assembly and installation of piping systems are explored. Examination, Inspection and Testing then precede the ASME BPE certification process, concluding with a discussion on system design. The author draws on many years' experience and insights from first-hand involvement in the field of industrial piping design, engineering, construction, and management, which includes the bioprocessing industry. The reader will learn why dimensions and tolerances, process instrumentation, and material selection play such an integral part in the manufacture of components and instrumentation. This easy to understand and navigate guide will assist engineers (design, piping, chemical, etc.) who need to understand the basis for much of the Standard’s content, as do the contractors and inspectors who have to meet and validate compliance with the BPE Standard.

Technology of Dispersed Systems and Materials. Physicochemical Dynamics of Structure Formation and Rheology

Naum Uriev B.

Written by the founder of the field, this practice-oriented guide summarizes the author's breakthrough research results and their applications in chemical technology. The book adopts an entirely novel approach, describing the physical chemistry of structure formation and materials synthesis under dynamic conditions. It begins by developing the general theory in the first two chapters with as little mathematics as necessary and substantiated by experimental results in each case. The following chapters deal with the fundamental aspects of rheology, vibrorheology, and superfluidity of structured dispersed systems within the framework of physicochemical dynamics, while the final chapter exemplifies the technological applications of the developed methodology using real-life problems of materials science and chemical engineering. The authoritative guide to physicochemical dynamics.

Jens Weidauer

Building Physics - Heat, Air and Moisture. Fundamentals and Engineering Methods with Examples and Exercises

Hugo Hens S.L.

Bad experiences with construction quality, the energy crises of 1973 and 1979, complaints about «sick buildings», thermal, acoustical, visual and olfactory discomfort, the need for good air quality, the move towards more sustainability – all these have accelerated the development of a field that, for a long time, was hardly more than an academic exercise: building physics (in English speaking countries sometimes referred to as building science). The discipline embraces domains such as heat and mass transfer, building acoustics, lighting, indoor environmental quality and energy efficiency. In some countries, fire safety is also included. Through the application of physical knowledge and its combination with information coming from other disciplines, the field helps to understand the physical phenomena governing building parts, building envelope, whole buildings and built environment performance, although for the last the wording «urban physics» is used. Today, building physics has become a key player on the road to a performance based building design. The book deals with the description, analysis and modeling of heat, air and moisture transport in building assemblies and whole buildings with main emphasis on the building engineering applications, including examples. The physical transport processes determine the performance of the building envelope and may influence the serviceability of the structure and the whole building. Compared to the second edition, in this third edition the text has partially been revised and extended.

Modeling and Simulation of Logistics Flows 3. Discrete and Continuous Flows in 2D/3D

Jean-Michel Reveillac

Volume 3 begins with an introduction to which are added four chapters focused on modeling and flow simulation in an environment in 2 or 3 dimensions (2D or 3D). They deal with different cases taken from situations found in the field. A conclusion comes close this third book: – The different software used in this third volume; – Computer simulation of discrete flows; – Mixed flow simulation; – Flows in 3D and the evacuation simulation; – Flows in 3D for conveying and storage The conclusion discusses the future developments of the software and their integration into society. At the end of each volume is a bibliography and a list of web links. There is also a glossary explaining some abbreviations, acronyms and some very specific terminology of logistics and operations research.

Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics. Development, Application and Analysis

Atul Sharma

This book is primarily for a first one-semester course on CFD; in mechanical, chemical, and aeronautical engineering. Almost all the existing books on CFD assume knowledge of mathematics in general and differential calculus as well as numerical methods in particular; thus, limiting the readership mostly to the postgraduate curriculum. In this book, an attempt is made to simplify the subject even for readers who have little or no experience in CFD, and without prior knowledge of fluid-dynamics, heattransfer and numerical-methods. The major emphasis is on simplification of the mathematics involved by presenting physical-law (instead of the traditional differential equations) based algebraic-formulations, discussions, and solution-methodology. The physical law based simplified CFD approach (proposed in this book for the first time) keeps the level of mathematics to school education, and also allows the reader to intuitively get started with the computer-programming. Another distinguishing feature of the present book is to effectively link the theory with the computer-program (code). This is done with more pictorial as well as detailed explanation of the numerical methodology. Furthermore, the present book is structured for a module-by-module code-development of the two-dimensional numerical formulation; the codes are given for 2D heat conduction, advection and convection. The present subject involves learning to develop and effectively use a product – a CFD software. The details for the CFD development presented here is the main part of a CFD software. Furthermore, CFD application and analysis are presented by carefully designed example as well as exercise problems; not only limited to fluid dynamics but also includes heat transfer. The reader is trained for a job as CFD developer as well as CFD application engineer; and can also lead to start-ups on the development of «apps» (customized CFD software) for various engineering applications. «Atul has championed the finite volume method which is now the industry standard. He knows the conventional method of discretizing differential equations but has never been satisfied with it. As a result, he has developed a principle that physical laws that characterize the differential equations should be reflected at every stage of discretization and every stage of approximation. This new CFD book is comprehensive and has a stamp of originality of the author. It will bring students closer to the subject and enable them to contribute to it.» —Dr. K. Muralidhar, IIT Kanpur, INDIA

Critical Infrastructure Protection in Homeland Security. Defending a Networked Nation

Ted G. Lewis, PhD.

"…excellent for use as a text in information assurance or cyber-security courses…I strongly advocate that professors…examine this book with the intention of using it in their programs." (Computing Reviews.com, March 22, 2007) «The book is written as a student textbook, but it should be equally valuable for current practitioners…this book is a very worthwhile investment.» (Homeland Security Watch, August 17, 2006) While the emphasis is on the development of policies that lead to successful prevention of terrorist attacks on the nation’s infrastructure, this book is the first scientific study of critical infrastructures and their protection. The book models the nation’s most valuable physical assets and infrastructure sectors as networks of nodes and links. It then analyzes the network to identify vulnerabilities and risks in the sector combining network science, complexity theory, modeling and simulation, and risk analysis. The most critical components become the focus of deeper analysis and protection. This approach reduces the complex problem of protecting water supplies, energy pipelines, telecommunication stations, Internet and Web networks, and power grids to a much simpler problem of protecting a few critical nodes. The new edition incorporates a broader selection of ideas and sectors and moves the mathematical topics into several appendices.
