An outrageous sortie on a pre-war BSA and two obscure, obsolete Yorkshire-made, single-cylinder Panther motorbikes. Poorly funded, with little planning, the ride depends on good luck, blind loyalty and terminal optimism. The struggle is managed with a youthful naivety. This is a recollection of a youth well-spent. Love and adventure are in the air with every chapter a precarious adventure. "I was parched and scarcely able to breathe but I pushed and shoved and swore, screamed, yelled and cried and somehow I got Penelope up that bloody hill and struggled on until I could see the brick outpost over a sand dune. In the last 20 yards I bogged down again, and so leaving Penelope upright in the sand I staggered in, to the amazement of the soldiers. I beg for water"

Am I too old to start a new career? For some reason, I am asked this quite frequently. My answer is always NO. I truly believe we can do anything at any age if we have the desire. To prove it, I decided that I still had an unfulfilled dream and decided that it was time that I tackled it. After 50 years teaching and raising five wonderful daughters, I have completed a booklet called The ‘Shopping Truth About Christmas.’ Researching this book has been a new, wonderful, exciting experience. Writing it proved to be much more difficult than I ever thought. I have a new appreciation for all the gifted authors in our world. However, the new way in which books are published on the Internet is a motivating factor for anyone who wishes to write. I chose topic ‘The Shopping Truth About Christmas’ because of the crazy commercialization which surrounds our Christmas tradition really irritates and upsets me. ‘Why do we do it?’ I ask myself every year, so I decided to find some answers. However, my research took me on an earth-shattering journey, which the book will reveal.

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich houses the largest collection of scale ship models in the world, many of which are official, contemporary artefacts made by the craftsmen of the navy or the shipbuilders themselves, and ranging from the mid seventeenth century to the present day. As such they represent a three-dimensional archive of unique importance and authority. Treated as historical evidence, they offer more detail than even the best plans, and demonstrate exactly what the ships looked like in a way that even the finest marine painter could not achieve. This book is the first of a series which will take selections of the best models to tell the story of specific ship types – in this case, the evolution of the cruising ship under sail. Each volume reproduces a large number of model photos, all in full colour, and including many close-up and detail views. These are captioned in depth, but many are also annotated to focus attention on interesting or unusual features. Although pictorial in emphasis, the book weaves the pictures into an authoritative text, producing an unusual and attractive form of technical history. While the series will be of particular interest to ship modellers, all those with an interest in ship design and development will attracted to the in-depth analysis of these beautifully presented books.

Discover a novel approach to the traditional craft of stained glass. Noted artist Ed Sibbett, Jr.'s unique designs make use of beveled glass and «jewels» — specially cut glass that captures and refracts light. The facets cut into the glass make light dance, mimicking the inner fire of an expertly cut precious gem. The effect is stunning: the rich tones and linear designs of stained glass glitter with sparkling, elegant highlights. The wealth of patterns featured in this volume makes it easy to achieve the exquisite beauty and lore of jewel-cut glass. No special skills are required. One-of-a-kind patterns incorporate beveled and jeweled glass right into the design. They are as easy to use as ordinary stained glass and readily available from craft supply stores. You can create a dazzling array of stained glass projects based on Sibbett's designs. Over 80 floral, geometric, bird, butterfly, fish, Art Nouveau, and Victorian motifs appear in square, rectangular, circular, octagonal, and free-form shapes. Adapt them for door and window panels, box components, candle shelters, mobiles, mirrors, and lightcatchers, or any project that requires extra sparkle and sophistication.
Few objects evoke the spirit of Christmas and a holiday atmosphere more effectively than light and airy snowflakes. Now, with this unusually extensive and comprehensive collection of patterns, crocheters can add exquisitely shaped «snow gems» to their treasure chest of festive ornaments.Delicate snowflake patterns, infinite in form and amazingly symmetrical, are among the most popular designs with today's needleworkers. The 60 motifs in this collection, based on photographs of actual snowflakes from the book Snow Crystals by W. A. Bentley and W. L. J. Humphreys, include simple shapes for beginners, as well as intricate and challenging motifs for the more advanced. Eye-catching patterns include star-shaped wheels, exotic flower-like webs, six-side jewels of intricately worked threads, and a kaleidoscope of lacy arms and elaborate fern-like compositions.Ideal for decorating Christmas trees, windows, and packages, or for framing, the snowflake patterns included here come with complete directions and finely detailed illustrations; and unlike nature's fragile, short-lived crystals, these inexpensive ornaments will be a joy to behold for years to come.
