A Season for Violence

Thomas B. Dewey

They hopped a boxcar and made a run for it. He was a wanted man – she was a woman who thought she's found her man. It was an outlawed passion, and it was doomed from the start…for crime always has a cost, and a life on the run is no life at all – unless you're willing to risk everything!

Run, Brother, Run!

Thomas B. Dewey

I had a dossier that made Dillinger look like a petty thief. This information was on a white card in a metal file in the prison records office. Attached to it was a newspaper clipping, describing the trial and the sentence and another describing the robbery itself. Only thing about it – it didn't describe the whole truth. A classic crime novel!

The Bird of Time

Wallace West

When the first expedition from Earth arrived on Mars, they were greeted with open arms. Not only had the Martians long ago learned all they wanted about Earth – they wanted nothing to do with us. To quote their welcoming committee: «You Earth people don't know your own history. You have always been incorrigible. When Mars was younger, we drove you back to your own planet, whereupon you tumbled into savagery for a gratifyingly long time. The really intelligent Martians then emigrated to the ends of the universe to avoid a second encounter. In fact we are not interested in playing cowboys and indians with your people.»
But Earthmen ARE incorrigible, and Martians are obstinate, and the result is an adventure-packed novel that spans two planets and several stars and is great science-fiction all the way!
"A running chronicle of the conflict between the ancient feathered folk of Mars and the brash expansionists of Earth.... It is entertainment from start to finish, with only snatches of the serious aspects of dying Mars and bull-headed Earth. Go along with the author and enjoy the story." – P. Schuyler Miller, Analog Science Fiction

Vampires of Atlantis

Brian Stableford

Kirk Markham returns to his home town of Leeds in 1999 after three years at university «down south.» In order to support himself while he tries to find a respectable career, he gets a job in a call center, which proves more challenging than he had anticipated, both professionally and socially. There he meets and falls in love with goth-girl Sheena, who is not like other girls, to put it mildly. Her uniqueness only makes her more attractive to him, and he makes every possible effort to live up to her hopes and expectations. At first, he treats his necessary involvement with the vampires of Atlantis as an intriguing game of make-believe, at which he considers himself to be a clever player, but as the game becomes increasingly serious, the possibility grows that he might be out of his depth.

The Future Is Ours: The Collected Science Fiction of Edward D. Hoch

Edward D. Hoch

Edward D. Hoch was and is the undisputed master of the mystery short story. His total output of published short fiction hovers just under 1,000 stories (estimates are in the neighborhood of 960 stories). Hoch (pronounced «Hoke») is best remembered for his fair-play and impossible crime short stories, particularly the series featuring Dr. Sam Hawthorne, a small-town physician who unraveled seemingly impossible «problems» in 1920s New England. His other popular series characters included British Intelligence codebreaker Jeffrey Rand and thief-for-hire Nick Velvet.
While a vast majority of Ed Hoch's stories were mysteries, he enjoyed horror and science fiction. Of his nine-hundred-plus output, he wrote several handfuls of horror and science fiction stories that appeared in various magazines and anthologies. It could be argued that his first published story, «Village of the Dead» (which appeared in the December 1955 issue of the pulp magazine Famous Detective Stories), is as much horror as it is a mystery. In that story, the mass suicide of an entire village is investigated by Simon Ark, a mysterious—possibly two-thousand year old—Coptic Priest.
Here, then, are 31 tales of the future, the fantastic, and the improbable by a master of the craft: Edward D. Hoch, writer extraordinaire!
